Thermostat Test Water Pump Inspection
Replace the t h e r m o s t a t if it is open at room
temperature.
To test a closed thermostat:
1. Suspend the t h e r m o s t a t (A) in a container of water.
Do not let the t h e r m o m e t e r (B) touch the b o t t o m of
the hot container.
2. Heat the water and check the temperature w i t h the
thermometer. Check the temperature at w h i c h the
thermostat first opens, and at which it is fully open.
3. Measure the lift height of the thermostat w h e n it is
fully open.
STANDARD THERMOSTAT
Lift height: above 8.0 mm (0.31 in.)
Starts opening: 1 6 9 - 1 7 6 ° F ( 7 6 - 8 0 ° C )
Fully open: 194°F (90°C)
1. Remove the t i m i n g belt (see page 6-23).
2. Turn the water p u m p pulley counterclockwise.
Check that it turns freely.
3. Check for signs of seat leakage. A small a m o u n t of
" w e e p i n g " f r o m the bleed hole (A) is normal.
