1. Check the connecting rod bearing clearance w i t h
plastigage (see page 7-9).
2. Check the main bearing clearance w i t h plastigage
(see page 7-7).
3. Inspect the connecting rod bolts (see page
• • ) .
4. A p p l y a coat of engine oil to the main bearings and
rod bearings.
5. Install the bearing halves in the cylinder block and
connecting rods.

8. Lower the crankshaft into the block, seating the rod
journals into connecting rod No. 1 (B) and
connecting rod No. 4 (C). Install the connecting rod
caps and bolts finger tight.
9. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, seat the journals
into connecting rod No. 2 (D) and connecting rod
No. 3 (E). Install the connecting rod caps and bolts
finger tight. Install caps so the bearing recess is on
the same side as the recess in the rod.
10. A p p l y engine oil to the bolt threads, then install the
rod caps w i t h bearings, and torque the bolts to 20
N m (2.0 k g f m , 14 Ibf-ft).
11. Mark the connecting rod (A) and bolt head (B) as
s h o w n .
12. Tighten the bolt until the mark on the bolt head
lines up w i t h the mark on the connecting rod (turn
the bolt 90°).
13. Check main bearing clearance w i t h plastigage (see
page 7-9).
14. Install the main bearing caps and bearing cap
bridge. Coat the bolt threads w i t h engine oil.
15. Tighten the 11 m m bolts in t w o steps. In the first
step, tighten all bolts in sequence to about 29 N-m
(3.0 k g f m , 22 I b f f t ) : in the final step, tighten in the
same sequence to 78 N-m (8.0 kgf-m, 58 Ibf-ft).
