Troubleshooting the Automatic Maintenance System
Your printer is equipped with two identical Automated Maintenance System (AMS) stations. The
Primary station is located at the end of the gantry where the carriage parks. It is the default
station that is used in the day-to-day operation of the printer. A backup AMS station is located at
the opposite side of the gantry and is used only when there is an issue with the primary system. If
the printer's sensors detect a problem with the right AMS it asks you to Reset error and if it is not
resolved after several attempts, you can choose to switch maintenance functionality from the
primary to the backup AMS by selecting Disable AMS.
IMPORTANT
Before you select Disable AMS make sure that you look under the carriage from the end of the
gantry and check that the AMS suctionheads are not visible. if the suctionheads of the primary
(right) AMS are not retracted severe damage to the printheads can result if the backup AMS is
used.
The AMS must be cleaned daily and with special attention to the minimal amount of pressure
needed. This is documented in the section called Daily Maintenance. If the AMS is not cleaned
daily, accumulated ink can eventually cure and render the AMS non-functional. This situation is
not covered by service contracts. Also, If too much pressure is put on any of the suctionheads
during cleaning, they can become stuck at a level below where they can perform their function of
clearing blocked printhead nozzles. If this happens, a service call is necessary to make it
functional. In this case you will see a repeated message suggesting that you call for service.
However, you can continue to print since the backup AMS becomes the default one until the
primary one is fixed. Don't wait too long as this is the kind of situation where ink may cure in the
AMS, which means you will need to purchase a new one.
Call for Service
Try to eliminate simple problems before you call your service representative. However, it is
important to know when to call for service. Without training, servicing the printer yourself may
cause further damage. When you have determined that a service call is required, call as soon as
possible. Have the following information ready:
• Printer serial number — located near the AC power plug.
• Error message displayed on the control panel, if any.
• The exact circumstances when the error occurred, such as during printing, or maintenance.
• Note any unusual phenomena, such as peculiar printing, noises, and smells associated with
the failure.
