• Place the cam shaft (182) in a press. Support
the cam shaft gear. DO NOT support the thrust
plate (95).
NOTICE: The th ru s t p la te m u s t be p o s itio n e d so
th a t the key (96) d o e s n o t d am age it d u rin g the
re m o v a l o p e ra tio n .
• Press the cam shaft out of the cam shaft gear.

Tool Required:
J-22912-01 Support Plate (or equivalent)
• S upport the cam shaft (182) at the front journal with
tool J-22912-01 (or equivalent) (figure 30). Mount the
cam shaft in a press as shown.
• Lubricate the thrust plate (95) with engine oil.
1. Key (96) (if removed).
2. Spacer (97). Make sure the cham fer in the spacer
faces towards the journal radius.
3. Thrust plate.
4. C am shaft gear (94).
• MAKE SURE THAT THE TIMING MARK IS TO
THE OUTSIDE.
• Press the cam shaft gear onto the cam shaft
until it bottoms on the spacer (figure 30).
• Remove the cam shaft from the press.

Cam shaft to thrust plate clearance. Use a feeler
g a g e ( fig u r e 2 8 ). T h e c o rr e c t c le a ra n c e
0.003-0.008-inch.

CAMSHAFT BEARINGS

Refer to GENERAL ENGINE M ECHANICAL (SEC. 6A).

TIMING GEAR COVER

Clean
Old gasket from the gasket surfaces.

— Tim ing tab for damage.
— Tim ing gear cover for cracks, large dents, etc.

Seal (158). Pry the seal out with a screwdriver.

Tool Required:
J-35468 Seal Installer
• Seal (158). Use J-35468.
• Support the inside of the front cover around
the seal bore area.
• Press the seal into place. The open end of the
seal faces inside the front cover.
• Lubricate the seal lips with grease.

Old gasket from the gasket surface.
Im p o rta n t
• Do not immerse the pum p in solvent. The
solvent may enter the pum p's perm anently
lubricated bearings, dissolve the b e a rin g s'
lubricant supply, and cause prem ature bearing
failure.

Inspect
W ater pump shaft for roughness and end play. If the
is
shaft does not turn smoothly, or if there is excessive
end play, replace the water pump.
Water pum p body at the drain hole. If there is
evidence of coolant leakage, the water pum p shaft
seal is leaking, and the water pump should be
replaced.
