• This reading indicates the am ount of shims
needed for a nom inal p inion setting. The
pinion marking may change the pinion depth
by adding or deleting shim s from the nominal
pinion setting.
• A positive ( + ) pinion m arking indicates that the
distance between the ring gear centerline and the
pin io n head m ust in cre a se by the n u m b e r of
thousandths marked on the pinion. This means that
the shim pack will decrease by the same num ber of
thousandths.
• A negative (-) pinion m arking indicates that the
distance between the ring gear centerline and the
pinion head m ust decrease by the num b er of
thousandths marked on the pinion. This means that
the shim pack will increase by the same number of
thousandths.
• A pinion etched zero (0) will use the nominal setting
as determ ined in this procedure.
