FUEL REQUIREMENTS (Gasoline Engines) (If your truck has a diesel engine, see your Diesel Engine Supplement.) Your gasoline engine Light Duty Emission Class Vehicle (see chart below) is designed to use gasoline. Unleaded only u nleaded gasoline must be used for proper emission control system operation. Its use will also minimize spark plug fouling and extend engine oil life.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER (Gasoline Engines Only) The catalytic converter on your Light Duty Emission Class Vehicle (See Chart on previous page ) is an emission control device added to the exhaust system to reduce exhaust gas The converter contains a ceramic material coated with pollutants.

line. Push the dipstick back down an the way after taking the reading. Add oil needed. • If you check the oil level when the oil is cold, do not run the engine first. The cold oil will not drain back to the pan fast enough to give a true oil level.
Add just enough DEXRON ® II fluid to fill the transmission. It takes only one pint (0.5 litre) to raise the level from "Add" to "Full" with a hot transmission. Do not overfill the transmission. Overfilling can cause foaming and loss of fluid, which could result in transmission damage.
Cooling System Care It is not usually necessary to remove the radiator cap to check the coolant level. Lift the hood and look at the "see through" coolant recovery tank. This should done at regular intervals, such as during fuel stops. When the engine is cold, the coolant level should be at or slightly above the "Cold Level"...
Page 88
• Wait until the pressure is relieved (indicated by a hissing sound), then press down on the cap and continue to tum it to the left. CAUTION: To help avoid the danger of being burned, do not remove the radiator cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Scalding fluid and steam can be blown out under pressure if the cap is taken off too soon.
Radiator Pressure Cap The radiator cap, a 1 5 psi ( 105 kPa) pressure type, must be installed tightly, otherwise coolant may lost and damage to engine may result from overheating. Radiator pressure caps should be checked periodically for proper operation. If replacement is required, an AC-Delco cap is recommended.
If at operating temperature (approximately l SO"F (66.C)-hot to the touch), fluid should be between HOT and COLD marks. If at room temperature (approximately 70"F (21•q, fluid should be be between ADD and COLD marks. Fluid does not require periodic changing. *On some vehicles check fluid at remote reservoir only to make sure it is visible in reservoir at room temperature .
Air Conditioning Have your Dealer check your Air Conditioning system at some tim e during the winter months to be sure there has been no loss in cooling output. During the summer, see your Dealer immediately if you suspect the system is not performing as it should. The system will not operate below ambient temperatures of 40"F (4•C) regardless of control position.
Front Axle The front axle should be checked at the interval shown in the Maintenance Schedule and refilled with SAE SOW-90 GL-5 gear lubricant when necessary. With the differential at operating temperature, fill to the level of filler plug hole. If differential is· cold, fill to level of inch below the filler plug hole.
Page 94
I nflation Pressure The cold inflation pressures for your factory installed tires are listed on the Certification Label. Your tires must be inflated to these pressures to obtain the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) or G A WR (Gross Axle Weight Rating). Incorrect tire inflation pressures can have adverse effects on tire life and vehicle performance.

Excessive Idling An idling engine uses fuel, too. If you're faced with more than a minute wait, and you're not in traffic, it may be better to "turn otr' and start again later. Sudden Stops Sudden stops can also waste fuel; instead of moving the vehicle, the energy of fuel is wasted as heat in braking.
