Service Information
1. E n g i n e O i l i n g S y s t e m
T h e oiling systems of the
various
37-series
engines are described in the E n g i n e Section, and
are illustrated in Plates 36 and 38,
E n g i n e O i l R e c o m m e n d a t i o n s — E n g i n e oil
recommendations are the same for all 37-series
engines, and are given i n the C h a r t on page 170.
E n g i n e O i l C a p a c i t i e s — T h e engine oil capaci-
ties of the various 37 series cars are as follows:
Series 37-50, 60, 65, 70 and 75. . 7 quarts
Series 37-85
9 quarts
Series 37-90
10 quarts
E n g i n e O i l C h a n g e s — T h e engine o i l in a l l 37-
series engines should be drained and the engine
refilled w i t h fresh oil of the recommended grade,
(See Page 170), every 2000 miles. A t the same time
the o i i is changed the copper gauze in the engine
oil filler cap of all 37-series V - 8 engines, should be
cleaned in gasoline and clipped in S. A . E . 50 engine
oil.
T h i s does not apply to series 37-85 and 90
engines, on which the crankcase ventilating intake
is a separate unit and requires cleaning only when
the oil pan is cleaned.
E n g i n e O i l F i l t e r — T h e oil filter used on a l l 37
series cars is of the cartridge type.
T h e complete
filter should be replaced every 6,000 miles.
E n g i n e A c c e s s o r i e s — E n g i n e accessories
re-
quiring lubrication include the
generator
and
starting motor, which are fitted w i t h o i l cups for'
engine oil, the water pump, the timer-distributor,
and the carburetor air cleaner, which are covered
in Notes 5, 6, and 18.
T h e fan on all 37-series
engines has permanently sealed bearings which do
not require lubrication in service.
2. C l e a n i n g O i l P a n a n d S c r e e n
Cleaning of the engine oil pan and screen is
recommended on a l l series engines at 12,000 mile
intervals.
A l l of the engine oil passes through- the oil pan
and screen before reaching the o i l pump. Foreign
matter that m a y be in the o i l is both screened out
and permitted to settle out at this point so that the
oil reaching the pump is quite free from abrasive
particles.
A s
these
particles
accumulate,
the
screen
becomes clogged, restricting the flow of o i l and
permitting the settlings in the pan to be stirred
up and carried through the oiling system.
T h i s
material, being grit or metal particles, is highly
abrasive and capable of causing excessive wear
in the engine unless removed.
It is a good plan, when the oil pan is down for
periodic cleaning to inspect the connecting rod
and crankshaft bearings.
3. R e a r A x l e L u b r i c a t i o n
O n l y A p p r o v e d H y p o i d Differential L u b r i c a n t
should be used in the rear axles of all 37-series
Cadillac and LaSalle cars.
T h e use of proper grades of lubricant and the
regular inspection of the lubricant level is an
important service requirement.
T h e list of ap-
proved lubricants for use in these cars is available
from
the
factory
Service Department.
The
recommended inspection period is every 1,000
miles, and an approved H y p o i d L u b r i c a n t should
be added at each inspection, if necessary, to bring
the level up to the filler plug..
T h e rear axle must be drained, flushed, and
refilled with fresh lubricant of the correct grade
every 6,000 miles.
Note: When flushing out the differential case,
the
following
precautions
should
be
noted:
1.
D o not
flush
the axle
with
s t e a m .
Use either flushing oil or kerosene.
2. Never refill
rear axle without first
flushing out old lubricant.
4. T r a n s m i s s i o n L u b r i c a t i o n
T h e use of extreme pressure ( E . P.) lubricants
is recommended for all 37-series transmissions.
O n l y
lubricants
meeting
the
General M o t o r s
specifications, particularly w i t h regard to corrosion
should be used.
T h e correct specification is S. A .
E . 90 E P for all year use, although S. A . E . 160
lubricant m a y be used in warm climates if desired.
T h e lubricant should be drained and replaced
with fresh lubricant every 6,000 miles.
5. W a t e r P u m p L u b r i c a t i o n
' T h e water p u m p on all 37-series cars is equipped
with one covered lubrication fitting at the water
p u m p p a c k i n g side of the impeller housing.
T h e
cover should be removed arid water pump grease
(G-13), applied every 1000 miles on all series.
Cross section views of all 37-series pumps are
shown in P l a t e 39.
T h e ball bearing used at the
forward end of the water pump shaft on the V - 8
engines is a permanently sealed bearing which
does not require lubrication i n service.
6. T i m e r — D i s t r i b u t o r L u b r i c a t i o n
In a d d i t i o n to the lubrication of the distributor
drive shaft bearing every
1,000 miles, the dis-
tributor advance mechanism requires occasional
attention to assure free operation.
