Introduction
T h i s Shop M a n u a l is a book of reference on the adjustment and repair of
Cadillac a n d LaSalle motor cars. It is intended for the use of service men who
are already familiar w i t h automobile construction and repairing i n general. It
is not a text book on elementary automobile mechanics.
In form, the book is designed for rapid reference. T h e General M o t o r s
parts grouping system is followed (See next page). E a c h group consists of a
brief description, service information i n the form of notes, a n d a specification
table giving important dimensions a n d clearances.
M u c h of the information is given i n full page pictures. T h e illustrated
pages are laid out to show, as far as possible i n picture form, the various repair
operations, as well as the differences and similarities of the various series.

In presenting information within the various groups, the LaSalle construc-
tion is covered first, then the 37-60 Cadillac, a n d finally, the larger Cadillac
cars. T h i s order has been followed because it gives first the information on the
larger-volume cars.
Identification
E a c h Cadillac and LaSalle car when shipped carries an engine number
which is also a serial number. This is the number to use i n filling out license
and insurance applications a n d i n general reference to the car. T h e engine
number is stamped on the car i n the location indicated.:
Series 37-50, 60, 65, 70 a n d 75—On the crankcase just behind the left
cylinder group, parallel to the dash.
Series 37-85 and 90—On the upper surface of the generator drive chain
housing.
T h e body style number, j o b number, a n d paint a n d t r i m numbers are
stamped on a plate attached to the front of the dash under the hood on the
left side on LaSalle 37-50 a n d Cadillac 37-60, 65, 70, 75, a n d 85, a n d to the
edge of the cowl on the right side on Cadillac 37-90. T h e body style numbers
are listed on page 22.
