Straightening w i t h heat will destroy the
effect of previous heat treatment, leaving the
steel either soft and weak or brittle and easily
broken.
W e l d i n g of parts subjected
to severe
strain
should never be permitted because the welding
process w i l l change the structure of the metal
around the weld, rendering it unsafe for further
use.
18. Care of Shock Absorbers
Aside from periodic checking of the
l i q u i d
level, the shock absorbers require attention only
in cases of noisy operation or unsatisfactory riding.
Correction of either of these conditions is explained
in N o t e 10, page 55 for both the front and rear
shock absorbers.
Shock absorber valve data are given in the speci-
fication table, and the installation of valves is
evident from the
sectional views i n Plates
18
and 21.
19. Swishing Noise i n Shock Absorbers
On some of the first series 37-50 and 60 cars, a
swishing noise is sometimes heard at low speeds
over rough roads due to the action of the o i l dis-
charged through the valves of the shock absorbers.
In case of such complaints, correction should
be made b y installing late type valves in the shock
absorbers.
T h e code and part numbers of these
late type valves are as follows:

In most cases, replacement of the valves i n the
front shock absorbers will be sufficient to elim-
inate the trouble, although the valves in the rear
shock
absorbers can be changed if necessary.
T h i s change can be made on the front shock
absorbers without removing them from the car.
Rear shock absorbers must be removed to make
this change.
It is i m p o r t a n t to change both compression
a n d rebound valves and to refill the
shock
absorbers w i t h oil after the change has been made.

used, if necessary, on series 37-65, 70, 75 and 85
front shock absorbers, for both rebound and c o m -
pression.
A g a i n , it is important to change b o t h compres-
sion and rebound valves and to refill the shocks
w i t h o i l after the change has been made.

Installing F r o n t Shock Absorbers
T h e correct m o u n t i n g of the front shock absorb-
ers on Series 65, 70, 75 and 85 is clearly shown in
Plate 8, F i g . 3.
M a k e certain that these shock
absorbers are always installed i n this position, as
it is possible to install them upside down, which
would of course throw the entire front suspension
system out of balance.
