22. Dictograph Phone Replacement
The
phone units i n Fleetwood Imperial and
T o w n cars are installed i n matched pairs.
If i t
is ever necessary to replace either unit, they should
both be removed and a new matched pair installed
in their places.
In the event of weak signals w i t h a pair k n o w n
to be properly matched, check carefully for loose
connections and possible shorts or grounds i n the
wiring caused b y staples or tacks.
23. Radio Installation Precautions
Installation
instructions
provided w i t h
the
Cadillac M a s t e r a n d Standard R a d i o s contain
ample information for correct installation. T h e
following precautions are repeated, however, as
they have an important bearing o n the operation
of the entire electrical system.
R a d i o suppression resistors must be installed
on the spark plug wires a n d the ignition coil
secondary wire, a n d condensers o n the generator
armature terminal and the coil p r i m a r y t e r m i n a l .
N o condenser is needed for the electric-wound
clock as i t does not radiate interference.
T o install the condenser i n the coil remove the
coil end cover w i t h T o o l N o . J-726 and install as
shown in Plate 61, F i g . 4. A t t a c h the eye-terminal
to the p r i m a r y terminal of the coil, and solder
the flat-tip terminal to the coil case.
The
generator condenser should be installed
as shown i n Plate 61, F i g . 5. M a k e certain that it
is connected to the generator terminal and not to
the field terminal, otherwise serious damage to
the current regulator m a y result.
A rasping noise occurring i n the radio at low
engine speeds is not likely to be the result of
improper suppression but is probably the result of
loose brushes i n the generator.
T h i s difficulty
should be corrected at the source immediately, as
loose brushes m a y damage the current regulator.
24. Installing Electrical Accessories
W h e n installing additional electrical equipment,
such as heaters, spot lights and cigar lighters, they
should be connected so that they will not interfere
w i t h the operation of the thermostat relay (the
"fuse" of the lighting system), yet so that the
new circuit will also be protected by the relay.
E q u i p m e n t of this sbrt should o r d i n a r i l y be
connected to the open terminal on the thermostat
relay, which is mounted o n the back of the instru-
ment panel.
If the owner installs so m u c h elec-
trical equipment that the total normal load causes
the relay to vibrate, i t w i l l be necessary to connect
some of the equipment direct to the discharge
side of the ammeter.
E q u i p m e n t so connected
will n o t have circuit breaker protection.
25. Removing Oil Gauge
W h e n removing o i l pressure gauge, first discon-
nect the battery lead at the ammeter i n order to
avoid the possibility of damage due to a short at
the ammeter connections.
