  • Page 24 This figure lights up when you turn the key to “Run” or “Start” when your safety belt isn’t buckled, and you’ll hear a chime, too. It’s the reminder to buckle up. In many states and Canadian provinces, the law says to wear safety belts. Here’s why: They work.
  • Page 25 why Safety Belts Work When you ride in or on anything, you go as fast as it goes. For example, if the bike is going 10 mph (16 kmih), so is the child.

  • Page 29 With safety belts, you slow down as the vehicle does. You get more time to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That’s why safety belts make such good sense. HERE ARE QUESTIONS ASKABOUT SAFETYBELTS ==AND THE ANSWERS Won’t I be trapped in the vehicle afier an accident ifI’m wearing a safety belt?
  • Page 30 instead of them. Every “air bag” system ever offered for sale has required the use of safety belts. Even if you’re in a vehicle that has air bags,” you still have to buckle up to get the most protection. That’s true not only in frontal collisions, but especially in side and other collisions.
  • Page 31 There are special things to know about safety belts and children. And there are different rules for babies and smaller children. If a child will be riding in your Cadillac, see the section after this one, called ‘Thildren.’’ everyone’s protection.

  • Page 34 The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you'd be less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen.
  • Page 35 Sit well back in the seat 2. Start pulling the shoulder belt out.
  • Page 36 4. Let the belt go back all the way. You should hear a slight clicking sound. If you don’t, the adjustment feature won’t set, and you’ll have to start again. If you move around in the vehicle enough, or if you pull out the shoulder belt, the belt will become tight again.
  • Page 37 What’s wrong with this? The shoulder belt is too loose. It won’t give nearly as much protection this way. CAUTION: You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. In a crash you would move forward too much, which could increase injury.

  • Page 43 The Air Bag System Works Where is the air bag? The driver's air bag is in the middle of the steering wheel. When is an air bag expected to inflate? The air bag is designed to inflate in moderate to severe frontal or near-frontal crashes.
  • Page 44 What makes an air bag inflate? In a frontal impact the vehicle detect that the vehicle crash. These sensors complete an electrical circuit, triggering a chemical reaction of the sodium azide sealed in the inflator. The reaction produces nitrogen gas, which inflates the cloth bag. The inflator, cloth bag, and related hardware are all part of the air bag inflator module packed inside the steering wheel.

A green arrow means you may drive in that lane. Look for the signs posted to warn drivers what hours and days these systems are in effect.
  • Page 188 DEFENSIKE D m N G The best advice anyone can give about driving is: Drive defensively. Please start with a very important safety device in your Cadillac: Buckle up. Ideally, no one should drink alcohol and then drive. But if one does, then what’s “too much”? It can be a lot less than many might think.
  • Page 191 mixed drinks if each had 1-1/2 ounces (45 ml) of a liquor like whiskey, gin or vodka. It’s the amount of alcohol that counts. For example, if the same person drank three double martinis (3 ounces or 90 ml of liquor each) within an hour, the person’s BAC would be close to 0.12 percent.

  • Page 193 Sometimes, as when you’re driving on snow or ice, it’s easy to ask more of those control systems than the tires and road can provide. That means you can lose control of your vehicle. BRAKING Braking action involves perception time and reaction time. First, you have to decide to push on the brake pedal.
  • Page 194 with traffic. This between hard stops. Your brakes will wear out much faster if you do a heavy braking. Don’t “ride” the brakes by letting your left foot rest lightly on the brake pedal while driving. CAUTION: “Riding” your braws can cause them to overheat to the point that they won’t work well.
  • Page 195 But you will use it when you brake. Once the power assist is used up, it may take longer to stop and the brake pedal will be harder to push. Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) Your Cadillac has an advanced electronic braking system that will help prevent skidding. See “Anti-lock Brake System Warning Light” in the Index.
  • Page 196 Here's how anti-lock works. Let's say the road is wet. You're driving safely. Suddenly an animal jumps out in front of you. You slam on the brakes. Here's what happens with A B S . A computer senses that wheels are slowing down. The computer separately works the brakes at each front wheel and at the rear wheels.
  • Page 197 CAUTION: Anti-lock doesn’t change the time you need to get your foot up to the brake pedal. If you get too close to the vehicle in front of you, you won’t have time to apply your brakes if that vehicle suddenly slows stop, even To Use Anti-Lock:...
  • Page 198 Disc Brake Wear Indicators Your Cadillac has front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Disc brake pads have built-in wear indicators that make a high-pitched warning sound when the brake pads are worn and new pads are needed.
  • Page 199 VOTICE: Cmtinuing to drive with worn-out brake pads could result in costly brake repair Some driving conditions or climates may cause a brake squeal when the brakes are first applied or lightly applied. • Page 201 -- if you can stop in time. But sometimes you can’t; there isn’t room. That’s the time for evasive action -- steering around the problem. Your Cadillac can perform very well in emergencies like these. First apply your brakes. It is better to remove as much speed as you can from a possible collision.
  • Page 202 The fact that such emergency situations are always possible is a good reason to practice defensive driving at all times. OFF-ROAD RECOVERY You may find sometime that your right wheels have dropped off the edge of a road onto the shoulder while you’re driving. If the level of the shoulder is only slightly below the pavement, recovery should be fairly easy.
  • Page 203 QCe ROAD RECOVER) If the shoulder appears to be about four inches (100 mm) or more below the pavement, this difference can cause problems. If there is not enough room to pull entirely onto the shoulder and stop, then follow the same procedures.
  • Page 204 So here are some tips for passing: “Drive ahead.” Look down the road, to the sides, and to crossroads for situations that might affect your passing patterns. If you have any doubt whatsoever about making a successful pass, wait for a better time.
  • Page 205 “overdriving” those conditions. But skids are always possible. The three types of skids correspond to your Cadillac’s three control systems. In the braking skid your wheels aren’t rolling. In the steering or cornering skid, too much speed or steering in a curve causes tires to slip and lose cornering force.
  • Page 206 surfaces because stopping distance will be longer and vehicle control more limited. While driving on a surface with reduced traction, try your best to avoid sudden steering, acceleration, or braking (including engine braking by shifting to a lower gear). Any sudden changes could cause the tires to slide.
  • Page 207 Adjust your inside rearview mirror to reduce the glare from headlights behind you. Since you can’t see as well, you may need to slow down and keep more space between you and other vehicles. It’s hard to tell how fast the vehicle ahead is going just by looking at its taillights.
  • Page 208 High Beams If the vehicle approaching you has its high beams on, signal by flicking yours to high and then back to low beam. This is the usual signal to the headlight beams. If the other driver still doesn’t lower the beams, resist the temptation to put your high beams on.
  • Page 209 D M N G IN THE RAlN Rain and wet roads can mean driving trouble. On a wet road you can't stop, accelerate or turn as well because your tire-to-road traction isn't as good as on dry roads. And, if your tires don't have much tread left, you'll get even less traction.
  • Page 210 Driving too fast through large water puddles or even going through some car washes can cause problems, too. The water may affect your brakes. Try to avoid puddles. But if you can’t, try to slow down before you hit them. CAUTION: Wet brakes can cause accidents.
  • Page 211 You could find out the hard way: when you have to slow, turn, move out or if you get hit by a gust of wind. You could suddenly find to pass yourself out of control. Hydroplaning doesn’t happen often. But it can if your tires haven’t much tread or if the pressure in one or more is low.
  • Page 212 DRZWNG IN FOG, MISTAND HAZE Fog can occur with high humidity or heavy frost. It can be so mild that you can see through it for several hundred feet (meters). Or it might be so thick that you can see only suddenly to an otherwise clear road.

Here are ways to increase your safety in city driving: Know the best way to get to where you are going.
  • Page 215 Obey all posted speed limits. But remember that they are for ideal road, weather and visibility conditions. You may need to drive below the posted limit in bad weather or when visibility is especially poor. • Page 216 Switch on your turn signal, check your rearview mirrors as you move along, and glance over your shoulder as often as necessary. Try to blend smoothly with the traffic flow.
