Turn on the display unit and peripheral devices connected with the server. Press the POWER switch on the front panel of the server. The POWER LED goes on green, and after a while, NEC logo appears on the screen of the display unit.

CPU module, keyboard, and mouse. POST also displays messages of the BIOS Setup utility, such as the start-up message, while in progress. With the factory setup of the server, the NEC logo appears on the display unit while POST is in progress. (To display the POST check results, press Esc.)

General Description 2-15 After a few seconds from power-on, POST starts checking the memory. The count message of the base and expansion memory appears at top left on the display unit screen. The memory check may take a few minutes to complete depending on the memory size of the server.

Refer to the documentation attached to the rack or contact your service representative for the installation of the server on the rack. 3-8 Setting Up Your Server Installation Procedure This server can be installed in either the NEC rack or a third vendor's rack. Take the following steps to install the server in the rack. Installing Inner Rail (on one side) Take the following steps to install the inner rail on front or rear side of the rack.

IMPORTANT: If you are going to install the inner rails on both sides of the server, be sure to adjust the position of cooling kit properly. Page 68 3-18 Setting Up Your Server When the server is completely pushed into the rack, the server is locked. Make sure that clicking sound is heard. IMPORTANT: Be very careful not to get your finger caught in the levers or rails. Insert both sides of inner rails straight into the rack.

Connecting a powered peripheral device to the powered server will cause malfunctions and failures. To connect a third-party peripheral device or interface cable to the server, consult with your service representative for availability of such a device or cable.

3-26 Setting Up Your Server TURNING ON THE SERVER Turn on the server and follow the on-screen instructions for setup. POWER Switch First power on the peripheral devices, then press the POWER switch at the front of the server. The POWER LED goes on, and POST (Power-On Self-Test) starts.

Chapter 4 Configuring Your Server Configuration and setup utilities are used to change your system configuration. You can configure your system, as well as option boards you may add to your system, using the BIOS SETUP Utility. Several unique system parameters are configured using the BIOS SETUP, which is stored in the system FLASH memory.

4-2 Configuring Your Server SYSTEM BIOS (SETUP) The SETUP utility is used to change system configuration parameters. This utility is pre-installed in the flash memory of the server and ready to run. The server is configured with the correct parameters using the SETUP utility and shipped in the best conditions.

Configuring Your Server 4-3 Starting SETUP Utility Powering on the server starts POST (Power On Self-Test) and displays its check results. If the NEC logo is displayed, press Esc. After a few seconds, the following message appears at bottom left on the screen.
