Silvia PID Installation Guide
Part A
Version 2.04
Step A4 – Mount the SSR
Locate the 4 mm screw that is sticking
through the black metal wall behind the
back splash (this is the end of the screw
that secures the main power cable on the
other side of the black metal wall). You
are going to use that screw to hold the
Solid State Relay (SSR) in place.
In your kit, locate the 4 mm nut and a 4
mm lock washer. The photo at right
shows the nut (on the left in picture). The
lock washer in your kit will be one of the
three types shown in the photo below (on the right). You should place the lock washer
between the nut and the SSR. A deep well 7 mm socket is the best tool for installing this
nut.
With the two larger terminals (1 and 2) on "top", place the SSR against the black metal
wall, over the protruding screw, and snugly fasten into place.
If you wish, you may apply a thin layer of white thermal paste to the shiny side of the
SSR before mounting. Our testing, however, has shown that this step is not really
necessary. Because of the low duty cycle, the SSR generates very little heat in this
application. So using the paste is optional. A small tube of thermal paste is included in
your kit for mounting the thermocouple and you may use some for the SSR if you wish to
enhance heat sinking capacity.
Do not fully tighten yet, though, because you will probably need to adjust the position of
the SSR later when you install the safety cover.
