Silvia PID Installation Guide
Part C
Version 96-2.04
You will notice that, while in steam mode, Silvia's ready light will remain lit until the
temperature reaches a certain point, usually between 285F and 300F. At this point, the
steam thermostat switches off the heating element (and the ready light) and allows the
boiler to begin a cooling cycle. To maximize steaming power, you should make note this
steam "off" point. Then, in the future, make it a habit to begin steaming your milk before
this "off" point temperature is reached. This way the heating element remains on
throughout the steaming operation.
Steaming with your PID'd Silvia (with steam package)
If you have installed a steam control package with your Series 96 controller, then when
you flip Silvia's steam switch several things will happen.
First, the switch lamp will illuminate like it did before you installed any modifications.
This will give you an important visual indicator that the steam is "on."
Second, the coil in the relay you installed will be energized, closing the contacts on the
relay. The yellow wires you ran to the controller will then create a "contacts closed
event" in the Series 96 controller.
Third, the controller will respond to this event by immediately switching the set point to
300F. The PID will begin controlling to this new set point and Silvia will rapidly
approach steaming temperature.
After your normal purging of water from the steam wand, you can probably begin
steaming anytime after the temperature reaches 290F. It is probably not necessary to wait
until the temperature reaches 300F, although you certainly have this option. (The
controller has been pre-programmed so that no steam setpoint higher than 300F will be
accepted.)
When you have completed steaming, flip the steam switch off (do not forget this step).
The relay coil will be de-energized, opening the contacts, causing the controller to revert
to the brew setpoint (approximately 228F or wherever it is currently set).
