4 Operation

This section will describe how to control the knee joint by push-button and which warnings are
used by the feedback system of the E-MAG Active to inform you about malfunctions.

4.1 Control

CAUTION
Risk of falling due to unlocking / locking. Both permanent and once unlocking as well as permanent
locking of the system can result in an elevated risk of falling. The patient should not use these functions
whilst walking.
The orthosis position is measured by the control electronics while walking. The knee joint opens
before toe-off and locks before heel strike, in the end of the swing phase, so as to ensure a safe
heel strike. The electronic control of the E-MAG Active has been adjusted to your needs by the
orthotist during the first trial.
Two manual switching options are available so as to allow you for keeping the E-MAG Active
fully under control (Fig. 3):

4.1.1 Electronic Locking (permanent)

You can lock the knee joint with the upper push-button any time you feel lack of safety. This can
be used e.g. during walking on slopes or when you would like to stand for a longer time without
concentrating on the electronic control. To activate the lock, press the upper push-button briefly
twice (like double mouse click). This function will be confirmed by an acoustic signal.
The locking function is deactivated with a "double mouse click" on the upper button until you
hear an audible tone.

4.1.2 Electronic Unlocking (once)

With the lower button, the patient can unlock the joint once (e.g. in order to sit down). In order to
do so, briefly press the lower button twice in quick succession (like double-clicking a computer
mouse). This function is not confirmed by a non audible signal.
