3 Initial operation
INFORMATION
The E-MAG Active can only be operated with the intended 317B20 battery. It was developed especially for the E-
MAG Active. Both the receptacle and lock unit are designed to fit with the form of this battery.
INFORMATION
Before putting the E-MAG Active into operation, read the instructions for the 317B20 battery and the 317L20 bat
tery charger. In particular, please be sure to take note of the safety information provided.
This section will describe how the E-MAG Active can be activated/deactivated and how it can be reactivated from
the energy-saving mode. The section also explains how the electronic system starts and which signals the system
emits during activation.

3.1 Charging the battery

INFORMATION
After charging, the E-MAG Active can be used for around 5,000 steps (corresponds to about 5 km) with one bat
tery charge. Nevertheless, charging the battery daily (ideally at night) is recommended.
INFORMATION
In daily use, the charging time depends on the remaining capacity and maintenance of the battery. The charger
can charge two batteries at the same time.
INFORMATION
The battery should always be removed when the orthosis is not in use.
INFORMATION
The LEDs on the charger must not be illuminated prior to inserting the battery. If they are illuminated, please sub
mit the charger to an authorised Ottobock Service Centre.
First plug the battery charger into a power outlet and then insert the battery into the charger (see fig. 1). One full
charging cycle takes 8 to 10 hours. Place the charged battery into its receptacle; it should snap easily into the
holder. The contacts have to face up and in. In order to do so, insert the battery into the receptacle at an angle and
press it against the orthosis. One can hear the battery lock into place when it is properly inserted.
