Editing FM Layers

FM layers can be used to emulate classic FM synthesizers by using 6 Operators in 1 of
32 algorithms. FM layers also allow FM synthesis techniques to be combined with VAST
synthesis features to create never before heard sounds.
FM layers contain pages that are not available in VAST layers. This includes the FM Main
page, the FM Operator page, the FM Layer page, the FM Amp + Output Page, the FM Alt
Input Page, and the FM Operator Mute Page. See the sections below for details on each of
these pages. The remaining pages in FM layers are common to FM and VAST layers. For
descriptions of these pages see the relevant VAST sections of this chapter.
Note: The K2700 can load .SYX files containing FM programs from classic 6 operator FM
synthesizers. Imported FM programs can be edited in Program Mode and combined with
additional layers and VAST synthesis features. For details on loading files see
page
FM Layer Structure
Each FM layer contains 6 Operators in 1 of 32 algorithms. The 6 Operators are the primary
sound source in FM layers. Each Operator contains an oscillator with amplitude controlled
by an envelope generator. FM synthesis allows you to modulate the frequency of the
Operators in order to create many timbres.
Note: Each note played by an FM Layer uses 4 of the K2700's 256 voices.

FM Operator Mute Page

When an FM layer is selected, press the MULTI Mode button to view the FM Operator
Mute page.
On the FM Operator Mute page, use the keypad buttons 1-6 to enable or mute operators
1-6 in the current layer. This is useful for separately listening to different operators or groups
of operators without changing each operator's Level setting.
Muted operators turn gray in the algorithm diagram. You can press the EXIT button to
continue editing while operators are muted. When a program is saved, all operators are
enabled.
