OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS – KEYBOARD
Operating the Model 4000C from a keyboard instead of the front panel allows the operator
greater versatility and control over the tester. Keyboard control can be added by interfacing to
an optional CRT/Terminal or a Personal Computer (PC) that is running a Terminal Emulation
Program like Cablescan TERM program. Refer to the Preparation section for setting up a
CRT/Terminal or PC. Using a keyboard, the operator can execute most functions available
through the Front Panel switches plus the following functions:
 Change test parameters
 Program harness continuities (Learn function)
 Examine a harness for programmed continuities (Test function)
 Assign user labels to point numbers
 Modify existing programmed harness continuities
The CRT/Terminal or PC also allows the operator to view 24 lines of information on the monitor
instead of just the single line on the Model 4000C Front Panel display.

ENTERING COMMANDS

Commands are entered at the system prompt. To get the prompt, press the ESC key on the
keyboard. Some commands are two letters that are executed by pressing their two keys,
followed by an ENTER. Other commands will require that a number be entered following the
two-letter command. Disk drive commands are single-letter commands, followed by either a 0
or 1 to specify the drive number. If a command requires a file name, a SPACE is entered after
the drive number, followed by entering the file name and an ENTER. (The > character is used
for the system prompt.)
There are six categories of commands as shown below:
 Test - test related commands. They allow a complete test to be run or specific tests for
shorts only or opens only.
 Build - used to start the build (or assembly) modes such as Sequential or Random build.
Keyboard entry also allows Sequential Build to be started at specific sequences.
 Print - enables user to obtain a hardcopy of test programs and test results.
 Disk - used to load, save, and maintain programs on disk. Allows specific eight-
character names to be entered.
 Setup - used to change test parameters to modify the number of test points used or the
test speed to compensate for interwire capacitance failures.
 Edit - used to keyboard-enter test programs or make changes to existing programs. It
also allows connector/pin labels (user notation) to be assigned to point numbers.

Test Commands

The following commands are related to the testing of opens and shorts, and the self testing of the
Model 4000C. These are two-letter commands, which are executed by pressing the two letter
