Logging SIParator Diagnostic Messages

The SIParator logging tool gathers diagnostic messages from SIParator events and displays that information as
an HTML document on the SIParator web inteface. You can optionally export the log for offline analysis. The
logging tool allows you to filter the messages based on several types of criteria.
To set up SIParator logging, follow these steps:
1. Click Logging and Tools on the main menu of the SIParator web interface.
The Logging Configuration page appears.
2. Click Display Log:
The SIParator logging options appear.
3. Set the appropriate logging options. The following options can make the log more useful:
• In the Time Limits section on the right, set the Show log from option to the date/time at which you want
the logging process to start. By not entering a date, the logging tool uses the current date. If no time is
entered, the log may get very big.
• In the SIP Packet Selection section near the bottom, enter INVITE in the SIP Methods field to provide
more detailed information about the SIP INVITE. Optionally, enter additional methods.
• If debugging SIP, check the SIP-related check boxes in the Show This section on the right. Optionally,
check other logging preferences.
4. To export the log, select the desired export file type and click Export Log in the Export the Log section at
the bottom of the page.

Capturing SIParator Packet Information

The SIParator has a built-in packet capture capability that can produce pcap trace files. This sniffer captures all
IP packets according to your selections, including those you cannot see in the log (like RTP packets). The SIParator
capturer needs to be manually activated and deactivated. As this produces a log that usually contains a lot more
packets than the standard log, it is advisable to run the capturer for short time periods only.
The capture of the packets can be downloaded and analyzed in any tool that handles pcap traces, such as
Ethereal/Wireshark.
To capture network packets, follow these steps:
1. Click Logging and Tools on the main menu of the SIParator web interface.
The Logging and Tools pages appears.
2. Click Packet Capture on the Logging and Tools page:
3. In the Network Interface Selection section, select the network interface from which to capture packets.
4. Click Start capture at the bottom of the page to start the capture.
5. When the test is finished, click Stop capture.
