Planning a Switched Network
This chapter provides an overview of virtual networking concepts related to
BayStack 281xx Fast Ethernet Switches and provides information for planning
a network that includes BayStack 281xx switches, routers, and bridges.
This chapter covers the following topics:
•
Virtual networking overview
•
LattisSpan
™
protocol
•
BayStack 281xx switch operation
•
Restrictions to using the BayStack 281xx switch in bridged and routed
networks
•
Connection of BayStack 281xx switches to shared-media hubs
•
Connection of BayStack 281xx switches to BayStack 281xx switches
•
Connection of BayStack 281xx switches to other BayNetworks LattisSpan
switches
•
BayStack 281xx switch software upgrades
This section provides information about using the virtual networking
capabilities of the BayStack 281xx switch, including:
•
Virtual network segmentation
•
Virtual networking with the BayStack 281xx switch
One of the major challenges many network managers face is the need to expand
network capacity and improve network performance while controlling the cost
and manageability of their networks.
The most widely used approach to increasing network performance is to divide
the network into smaller segments. Each segment then supports fewer users,
resulting in more available bandwidth for each user. This approach, known as
"microsegmentation," differs from ordinary network segmentation, which
isolates traffic between different workgroups.
