Connecting BayStack 281xx Switches

893-00965-A
Although it is possible to connect shared-media hubs to every attachment port
of the switch, you need to be aware that shared-media hubs typically do not
support full-duplex implementations and operate at 10 Mb/s using CSMA/CD
and, thus, should not be connected to the BayStack 281xx switch using
100 Mb/s full-duplex links.
BayStack 281xx switches can be connected to form switch communities using
either expansion or attachment ports. The link that connects two
BayStack 281xx switches is called a trunk link.
This section provides information about:
Creating trunk links using expansion ports.
Creating trunk links using attachment ports.
Address learning across trunks links.
Using redundant links in a switched community.
The seven-switch limit between end stations.
For more information about connecting BayStack 281xx switches, see
"Attaching Devices to the Baystack 281xx Switch," in Chapter 3, "Installing
the BayStack 281xx Switch."
The BayStack 281xx switch recognizes all connections to other
BayStack 281xx switches as trunk links. These links can exist between
BayStack 281xx switches using expansion ports or attachment ports provided
that the proper cables and/or transceiver devices are attached.
describes the possible port configurations and operating modes of
BayStack 281xx switch expansion and attachment ports.
