Connecting the modems

There are two modems on an Avaya S8500 Media Server configuration. One modem connects to the USB
port on the front of the Avaya S8500 Media Server. The other modem connects to the RS232 port on the
RSA card.
Required options on the USB modem is set by the operating system on the media server. Required
options on the RSA modem are set by Avaya defaults on the RSA board. There are no options to set on
either modem.
The modems for the media server and the RSA share one dedicated telephone line. The modem on the
Avaya S8500 Media Server always answers an incoming call if the media server is healthy. In the event
the media server is down, the modem on the RSA answers the incoming call. See

Terminate the 1-MB telephone line at the RJ11 jack outlet.

Connect the telephone line to the modems with the modular telephone cord supplied with each
modem.

Connect the USB cable from the USB modem to one of the USB ports on the front of the Avaya
S8500 Media Server.

Connect the serial cable from the serial modem to the RS232 port on the RSA card.

Connect the power cords from each modem to the power outlet.

USB and serial modems cannot connect to rotary lines. A TouchTone line is required.
