it is necessary t o take o u t a plug i n t h e hub shaft, extract t h e split p i n f r o m t h e
stub axle nut, then, after removal o f t h e nut, t h e hub complete w i t h bearings
can be withdrawn. T h e numbered parts are :
I and 3, inner and o u t e r gauges
of t h e felt retaining washer 2; 4 and 6 are t h e inner and o u t e r ball races; 5 is a
distance piece; 7 is a washer w i t h a small key registering i n t h e keyway i n t h e
stub axle: and

is t h e axle nut.

w h i c h must be subsequently split-pinned.
I t w i l l be noticed by Illustrations Nos. 73 and 73a t h a t t h e wheel locking nuts
are shaped i n a particular manner, and also t h e threads o n t h e near-side and
off-side h u b are dissimilar, a left-hand threaded cap being f i t t e d o n t h e off-side.
W h e n r e m o v i n g a wheel t h e b l o w w i t h t h e copper hammer should always be dealt
o n t o t h e straight side o f t h e extension o f t h e cap, and n o t o n t h e side w h i c h is
decidedly angular. B o t h i n Illustrations Nos. 73 and 73a t h e brake silencers have
been removed t o show h o w t h e y are fitted, consisting of, as t h e y do, a plate, t w o
springs, and t w o pins w h i c h are split-pinned i n position.
