Manual Gearbox.
It
is thought desirable t o deal w i t h the gearbox at some
length as
it
differs i n many respects from t h e o r t h o d o x t y p e o f box.
I t has been
seen that t h e change speed lever is fitted t o an extension t o t h e gearbox lid, and this
is shown removed i n Illustration N o .

The gearbox affords four speeds and
reverse. The gate is marked so that it is easy for anyone t o see where t h e Ist, 2nd,
3 r d and t o p speed gears are. I n o r d e r that t h e reverse gears shall n o t be inadvertently
engaged, t h e gate is provided w i t h a stop clearly visible. T h e gears are operated by
a
series o f forks coupled t o selector rods.

The
gearbox is bolted t o the flywheel housing, through which the unit support tube passes.
The
position of the drain plug can be seen and also the small holes of the flywheel housing connecting
with the bushes, carrying the clutch withdrawal shaft.

which t h e selector rods are locked i n position when t h e gear lever is placed i n
any o f t h e forward o r backward positions. T h e e x t e r i o r view o f t h e gearbox
should be studied, as
it
shows t h e filler o n t h e side o f t h e b o x which acts as an
automatic high level, and t h e drain plug beneath t h e b o x which can be removed
t h r o u g h t h e t r a p door i n t h e undershield b y means o f a b o x spanner.
