TESTING FOR ELECTRICAL FAULTS
In the unlikely event o f trouble, disconnect the lead from the terminal and strike
against the body o f the pump t o see i f
it
sparks and therefore i f any current is
available i n the wire. I f there is no current the trouble must be looked for elsewhere.
If the current is there remove the bakelite cover and touch the terminal w i t h the
lead. If nothing happens and the points are in contact and a spark cannot be struck
off the terminal
it
is probable that there is some d i r t on the points. I f on the other
hand the points are not i n contact look t o see i f the tips o f the inner rocker
"
U "
are in contact w i t h the magnet housing. I f they are not it indicates that the armature
has not gone right back. T o cure this loosen the six screws which hold the magnet
housing t o the body, make sure that the diaphragm is not sticking t o the magnet
housing by passing a penknife down the side o f
it
and remove the hinge pin
"
Z."
The six screws may then be tightened up again, when
it
w i l l probably be found that
the tips o f the inner rocker are making contact w i t h the magnet housing.
If they
are not
it
w i l l be necessary t o remove the whole magnet assembly, dismantle
it
and
see if any foreign matter has caused a jam.
NOISY PUMP l N D l C A T l O N S
I f the pump becomes noisy, look for an air leak on the suction side.
T o d o
this, first o f all make sure that the filter and inlet union are tight, and also see that
there is sufficient petrol in the tank. I f this does not cure
it, it
is probable that the
leak is somewhere in the pipe line, and the simplest way t o test for this is t o replace
the suction pipe w i t h a short length o f piping and let the pump suck petrol o u t o f
a can. I f the pump functions satisfactorily under these conditions the fault must be
elsewhere. If the pump goes on beating without delivering any petrol
it
is probable
that a piece o f d i r t has lodged under one o f the valves. This may be removed by
unscrewing the top union from the body and lifting the valve cage out. I f the pump
struggles t o pump and gets very hot,
it i s
probable that there is an obstruction
somewhere in the pipe line o r the filter may require cleaning.
