To reverse. Although reverse may be selected while t h e car is moving forward,
on no account should it be engaged u n t i l the car has been brought t o rest.
The

as explained above.
A safety catch is incorporated on the selector lever t o prevent reverse being
selected by accident.
To stop.
Depress and hold the clutch pedal right down before the car comes

I f on t h e other hand a prolonged stop is
expected and t h e driver wishes t o release his left foot, neutral must be selected
before t h e pedal is allowed t o return.
W h e n neutral is engaged the pedal w i l l
remain partly depressed.
W h e n changing down care should be exercised t o see that t h e speed o f t h e
car is n o t greater than t h e equivalent engine speed ; for example,
if
t h e car is running
at
30
miles an hour it would not be advisable t o change from t o p i n t o 1 s t gear,
because this would cause t h e engine t o run at a much greater speed than that for
which it i s designed, and
it
would be exactly the same thing as coasting down a
steep hill o n 1 s t gear w i t h the clutch out, and after t h e car has attained a momentum
of
30
miles an hour it would be inadvisable t o let t h e clutch in.
Before attempting t o follow t h e operation o f the gears
