o r t o w a r d s t h e busbar, so t h a t it i n t u r n w i l l engage w i t h t h e g r o o v e o f t h e busbar
and i n t u r n w i l l be forced upwards and cause t h e particular band o f t h e pre-selector
gear t o be contracted.
O n t h e right-hand side o f Illustration G it is possible t o examine t h e i n t e r i o r
o f t h e gearbox as is shown w h e n t h e t o p cover is removed.
T h e t o p cover is f o r m e d
i n t h e case o f t h e M.G. Magnette by t h e u n i t c o n t r o l t u n n e l mounting, and i n t h i s
illustration t h e 3 r d speed engagement t h a t was shown previously is viewed f r o m
above.
T h e t w o f u r t h e r points t h a t can be seen i n this i l l u s t r a t i o n are w h a t are
k n o w n as t h e adjuster set screws and t h e adjuster nuts.
T h e object o f these is t o
p e r m i t o f t h e wear t h a t takes place o n t h e brake bands being automatically com-
pensated f o r by a corresponding shortening o f t h e l i n k w h i c h is attached t o t h e
brake band at t h e l o w e r e x t r e m i t y and t o t h e adjuster n u t at t h e u p p e r e x t r e m i t y .

Follow
t h e arrows t o these parts : automatic adjusting nut, adjuster ring, adjusting set screw, tail plate, and
spring, t h e n n o t e t h e slot i n t h e adjuster ring, and t h e p a r t marked FP, i.e. fixed pin, i n t h e opposite
half of t h e adjuster ring.
Unless p r o p e r advice is obtained f r o m somebody w h o knows definitely w h a t
t h e action of t h e adjusting set screw really is, u n d e r n o circumstances should these be touched.
They
have a definite function t o perform, b u t i t has n o t h i n g t o d o w i t h t h e actual contraction o f t h e brake
bands ; they f o r m stops u p against w h i c h t h e adjuster r i n g abuts, so t h a t when a gear is engaged,
t h e adjuster r i n g is forced u p against t h e s t o p and a certain angular m o t i o n is imparted, causing t h e
adjuster plate t o p i v o t around t h e n u t t o t h e l i m i t o f t h e slot.
The manner i n which t h e spring is
actually r o u n d t h e nut, when t h e clutch pedal is pushed o u t , w i l l cause t h e adjuster r i n g t o move
o u t w a r d s against t h e tail plate and r o c k t h e adjuster r i n g i n t h e opposite direction, w h e n i t
comes i n contact w i t h t h e adjuster set screw.
This t o and f r o action causes t h e spring surrounding
t h e automatic adjuster n u t t o g r i p
it,
w h i c h w i l l cause
it
t o r o t a t e slightly o n i t s b o l t and so shorten
its length o f travel and automatically maintain p r o p e r adjustment.
If t h e r e is any semblance o f drag o r lack o f quick response, when t h e clutch is let i n " p u m p
"
clutch pedal, which means pushing
it
i n and o u t fully several times quickly t o t a k e u p any slack.
