Direction Indicator. The Saloon model is equipped w i t h a combined
direction indicator and stop lamp.
The stop lamp is wired i n the usual manner
and is controlled by t h e brake pedal.
The direction indicator is so connected that
a red warning lamp situated in the centre o f t h e switch is brought i n t o circuit when
either o f the indicator lamps are operated.
Thus it is impossible t o unconsciously
leave either o f the indicators " on."
Bulb replacement is effected by removing the case of the lamp when the lamp
holders are easily accessible.
Self Starter. This has already been described i n some detail on page 34 which
has more particular reference t o the dismantling of this unit, but the following
instructions may be o f some assistance in case the starter is not functioning properly.
Starter Motor. The starter motor is a specially designed four-brush machine
w i t h very high start and run torque.
It is brought into operation by the solenoid
o r relay fixed t o
i t s
yoke, which i n t u r n is controlled by the small push switch in
the instrument panel referred t o elsewhere.
Beyond an occasional inspection o f
the brushes and the usual cleaning instructions, the starter should require very
little attention.
It is, however, important that the engine should never be started
w i t h the ignition advanced, as, owing t o the high starting torque o f t h e starter, a
back-fire would possibly damage the spindle.
The armature spindles o f these machines are fitted w i t h a pinion which, on
rotation, runs i n t o engagement w i t h the geared ring on the flywheel.
Immediately
the engine begins t o fire, the pinion is automatically t h r o w n out of mesh.
If, for any reason, the pinion wheel on the m o t o r does not engage w i t h the
flywheel teeth, examine the screwed sleeve on the armature spindle t o see that
it
is free from dust ; i f necessary wash over w i t h paraffin.
Occasionally, give
it
a
few drops of t h i n machine oil.
As i n the case of the dynamo, the surface of the commutator must be kept
clean and free from oil, brush dust, etc.
The starter is designed for starting the engine under normal conditions, but
any unnecessary o r additional loading w i l l considerably diminish the life o f the
machine and battery.
In order t o facilitate starting in cold weather,
it
is advisable
t o flood the carburetter, and, before using t h e electric starter, crank t h e engine
over slowly by the starting handle for t w o o r three revolutions
;
this will break
the oil film and considerably diminish the load for starting.
In the event of the engine refusing t o fire after being turned by the starter,
make sure that the ignition switch is
"
on."
