Clutch.
The operation o f t h e clutch o n t h e modern m o t o r c a r is comparatively
speaking f o o l - p r o o f ; t h a t is t o say, w h e n t h e clutch pedal is pushed d o w n t h e p o w e r
f r o m t h e engine is disconnected, b u t w h e n t h e pressure o n t h e pedal is released
t h e clutch engages.
From a p o i n t o f view o f actual maintenance t h e r e are o n l y
t w o items in connection w i t h t h e clutch t h a t t h e o w n e r need t r o u b l e about-
one is periodical lubrication o f t h e clutch w i t h d r a w a l ball race o r t h r u s t ; secondly,
adjustment o f t h e set screws attached t o t h e withdrawal arms i n o r d e r t o give t h e
necessary clearance between t h e clutch plates w h e n t h e clutch is disengaged, and
equally t o prevent slipping w h e n engaged.
Access t o t h e clutch withdrawal collar is obtained b y removing t h e clutch
cover-plate.
T h e withdrawal o n l y needs a l i t t l e lubricant ; t o o much is worse than
none at all.
Excess w i l l be flung o n t o t h e clutch plates, which w i l l cause slipping.
Always use non-separating grease.
D o n o t p u t m o r e w o r k o n t h e w i t h d r a w a l
bearing than is necessary by pressing t h e foot o n t h e clutch pedal when driving.

d o so w i l l overheat t h e withdrawal and induce clutch slip.

finds a bearing in e i t h e r side o f t h e housing.
This shaft is attached t o t h e clutch
pedal, so t h a t when t h e latter is pushed f o r w a r d t h e

U "
shaped bracket w i l l
force t h e clutch w i t h d r a w a l sleeve f o r w a r d ; this clutch w i t h d r a w a l sleeve comes
i n t o contact w i t h t h e friction-faced disc w h i c h is attached t o t h e t h r e e w i t h d r a w a l
arms, w h i c h has t h e effect o f separating t h e clutch plates and compressing t h e springs
w h i c h cause t h e centre plates t o be gripped between t h e Ferodo faces attached t o t h e
pressure plate and clutch cover-plate.
