12.5. Recording Data

Signals of sensors, bridge conversations, VHF communications, and RADAR images are recorded in
chronological order to the final recording medium in the Protective Capsule Unit via the Recording
Control Unit. However, the information on the initial settings of the system configuration is recorded
before the equipment is shipped from a JRC factory or at the time of its installation on the ship.
The Recording Control Unit records such signals with time-stamps at an interval of 0.01 seconds.
12.5.1. Timing of Data Acquisition
When and how such signals are recorded onto the Protective Capsule Unit varies with their types.
1) Data sentences from sensors / devices:
The signals from sensors / devices are recorded onto the Protective Capsule Unit as they are
received.
2) Bridge conversations:
The signals of the conversations in the bridge are pooled, and then recorded at an interval of
1 minute in the form of a data stream (not as a file) onto the Protective Capsule Unit.
3) VHF communications:
The signals of the radio communications are pooled, and then recorded at an interval of 1
minute in the form of a data stream (not as a file) onto the Protective Capsule Unit.
4) RADAR images:

the form of a data stream (not as a file) onto the Protective Capsule Unit.
12.5.2. Recording Capacity
Any data stream is recorded to the final recording medium in the Protective Capsule Unit. For
each type of data, the memory area is assigned in the final recording medium and can store up to
12 hours' recording in the specific format depicted below.
1) Data acquired from sensors or devices
Up to 73 sentences with the maximum number of 82 characters in each sentence. (i.e.
approx. 6400 characters per second)
All AIS data can be recorded by increased storage capacity.
2) Bridge conversation data:
Up to 315 kB in audio data size per minute for each channel (a channel consists of 3
microphones). The maximum number of channels is 3 (i.e., 3 channels accounts for 9
microphones).
