Server Features

Storage and Media Drives

The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server offers slimline drive bays for flexibility in
storage and media drives. For more information about installing storage and media
drives into the slimline drive bays, refer to Chapter 5, "Installing Hardware Options."
Up to four 1-inch, hot-plug SCSI drive bays supporting either Ultra3 or Ultra4
hard drives or an HP universal hot-plug tape drive
Two slimline drive bays occupied by:
— One slimline 1.44-MB diskette drive
— One slimline IDE CD-ROM drive
NOTE: An optional DVD drive can be used in either slimline drive bay.

Hot-Plug Fans

The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server supports redundant hot-plug fans that are
divided into three zones. Each zone is independent of each other and is able to
support N+1 redundancy, as indicated below:
PCI-X expansion zone is 1+1 redundant (fans 1 and 2)
Memory zone is 1+1 redundant (fans 3 and 4)
CPU zone is 2+1 redundant (fans 5, 6, and 7)
NOTE: Refer to "Locating Hot-Plug Fans" in Chapter 5, "Installing Hardware Options," for an
illustration of the fans and their respective zones within the server.
This zone configuration enables the server to withstand up to three fan failures,
provided that they are not within the same zone. Within a zone, if the primary fan
fails, the server generates a system alert and commands the redundant fan to function
automatically. The subsystem of the redundant hot-plug fan protects the various
server components from overheating, provides rapid serviceability, and minimizes
the risk of system interruption. Features of the redundant hot-plug fans include:
Intelligent fan controllers with variable speed support and monitoring with a
system management driver installed
Redundant hot-plug fans standard in all systems
Individually hot-pluggable
