About This Manual
The GL11 00 Service Manual is divided into 19 sections, The
first (index) page of each section is marked with a black tab that
lines up with the tabs on this page. The section symbols printed
on the tabs also appear at the top of each right page.
Furthermore, the section titles appear at the top of each left
page so you can quickly get to where you want to be in the
manual.
Section index pages list the contents of each section and give
specific page references. Except for the Specifications and
General Information sections. "Service Information" follows
each index; be sure to read those few lines before you start any
procedure to avoid any difficulty once you're in the middle of a
job. In most cases a torque reference drawing will be in Service
Information. Beginning with this manual, torque values are
given in the metric standard newton· meters (N·m) and
foot~
pounds (ft-Ib). (See page 1-5 for a specific explanation of the
use of metric equivalents). A system troubleshooting list follows
the torque reference drawing. and then the service procedures
begin.
All service procedures are based on the standard GL11 00. In
those few isntances where the Interstate and Aspencade
models differ. the variations will be called out in the text or a
note. Variations between the different model years are also
called out
Sections 1 - 3 apply to the whole motorcycle, while sections4-
18 describe parts of the Gl11 00 grouped according to location.
Section 19, ·'Accessories". covers torque specifications and
removal/installation of accessories. Be sure to refer to the
Maintenance Schedule (Section
31
whenever a motorcycle is
brought in for service. Use the schedule to know what the
vehicle needs to stay in peak condition and within EPA-
established emission standards. The first schedule main-
tenance is especially important since it compensates for the
initial wear that occurs during the break-in period.
