Tape Drive Support

Scalar i500 libraries support the following tape drives:
Linear Tape Open-GEN 2 (LTO-2) SCSI and FC tape drives. The supported LTO-2 tape drives are
not compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.
Linear Tape Open-GEN 3 (LTO-3) SCSI and FC tape drives. The supported LTO-3 tape drives are
RoHS-compliant. LTO-3 FC tape drives allow FC speed configurations up to 4Gb/s
Linear Tape Open-GEN 4 (LTO-4) SCSI, Serial Attached SCSI (SAS), and FC tape drives. The
supported LTO-4 tape drives are compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)
directive. LTO-4 FC tape drives allow FC speed configurations up to 4Gb/s. A SAS tape drive's SAS
address is automatically and uniquely generated based on a unique WWN that the drive receives
when it is configured.
Mixed connectivity (using SCSI, SAS, and FC tape drives) is supported in Scalar i500 libraries. When you
create partitions automatically, the library assigns resources proportionately among the partitions, grouping
tape drives according to their interface type (SCSI, SAS, or FC). Creating partitions manually allows you
more control over the assignment of the tape drives to partitions. For information on creating partitions
automatically or manually, see
LTO SCSI tape drives are attached directly to the host. LTO SAS tape drives are attached directly to the
host. LTO FC tape drives can be directly attached to hosts or to the Storage Area Network (SAN). LTO FC
tape drives can also be attached to FC I/O blades, which manage communication between the hosts and
the drives. For more information on FC I/O blades, see
"Configuring Your Library."
Details about tape drive support include:
Every library configuration must contain at least one tape drive.
5U modules can hold a maximum of two tape drives.
9U modules can hold a maximum of four tape drives.
See
Table 23
on page 227 for supported media types and
drives supported by each library configuration.
Tape drives are installed into tape drive slots in the rear of the library. If a tape drive slot is empty, a filler
plate covers the empty tape drive slots to prevent debris from entering the library. Tape drives are shipped
filling the tape drive slots from the bottom to the top of the library, but the tape drives can be reinstalled in
any available tape drive slot.
Drive filler panels must be in place for the library to operate at normal speed.
Note
For information on adding tape drives, see

Library Features

This section describes several features of Scalar i500 libraries.

Licensable Features

In Scalar i500 libraries, LTO storage slots are licensed for use. The following situations may require you to
