Appendix 4. Abbreviations

ADE (Above Deck Equipment)

This refers to the Antenna. The Antenna unit for FELCOM-500 is FB-1500, and the
Antenna unit for FELCOM-250 is FB-1250.

BDE (Below Deck Equipment)

This refers to the Communication unit. Communication unit: FB-2000 is used
commonly between FELCOM-500 and 250. However, they have different nameplates.

APAC

It covers the Asian and Pacific ocean regions. The ID number of the satellite is "05",
and it is a 4th generation satellite of INMARSAT: I-4 positioned at 143.5E.

AMER

It covers the Americas region. The ID number of the satellite is "07," and it is a 4th
generation satellite of INMARSAT: I-4 positioned at 97.6W.

EMEA

It covers the European, Middle East, and African region. The ID number of the satellite
is "06," and it is a 4th generation satellite of INMARSAT: I-4 positioned at 25.1E.

CS (Circuit Switching)

A circuit switching method used for when making a phone call using analog phones or
ISDN phone by dialing and then confirming that the communication circuit is firmly
established with the counterparty before actually making the communication.

PS (Packet Switching)

A communication method where the data is divided into small units (packets) and is
then sent/received one by one.

SMS (Short Message Service)

A service where short text messages can be sent/received between mobile phones, etc.
The message volume that can be sent from FB is 160 characters(ASCII) at maximum.

LAN (Local Area Network)

LAN is a form of network where computers or printers within the same building are
connected by using twisted pair cables, coaxial cables, or optical fibers to exchange
data.
