System limits
Cruise control may be unable to maintain the
stored speed on uphill gradients. The stored
speed is resumed if the uphill gradient evens out
and the vehicle's speed does not fall below
30 km/h.
On long and steep downhill gradients, you should
change down to a lower gear in good time. Take
particular note of this when driving a laden vehi‐
cle. By doing so, you will make use of the
engine's braking effect. This will take some of the
strain off the brake system and prevent the
brakes from overheating and wearing too quickly.
If you change wheel size on your vehicle, check it
is assigned to the correct wheel size category
(
page 267). If the category is changed without
/
recoding the control units in the vehicle, the func‐
tioning of cruise control may be impaired.
Do not use cruise control in the following situa‐
tions:
in traffic situations where frequent speed
R
changes are required, e.g. in heavy traffic or
on winding roads
off-road or on construction sites
R
on slippery or slick roads, as the drive wheels
R
can lose traction when accelerating and the
vehicle can then skid
if there is poor visibility
R
Function of the limiter
The limiter restricts the speed of the vehicle. To
adjust to the set speed quickly, the limiter applies
the brakes automatically.
You can limit the speed as follows:
Variable: for speed restrictions, e.g. in built-
R
up areas.
Permanent: for long-term speed restrictions,
R
e.g. when driving in winter tyre mode.
You can operate the variable limiter with the
cruise control lever. You can store any speed
above 30 km/h. You can also perform settings
while the vehicle is stationary if the vehicle has
been started.
Observe the notes on driving systems and your
responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recog‐
nise dangers (
page 155).

(

tioning of the limiter may be impaired.
Kickdown
If you depress the accelerator pedal beyond the
pressure point (kickdown), the limiter switches to
passive mode. The multifunction display then
shows a message and you are able to exceed the
stored speed.
After completion of kickdown, the variable limiter
is activated again in the following situations:
If the driven speed drops below the stored
R
speed.
If the stored speed is called up.
R
If you store a new speed.
