Channel Quality Scan Tool

When a pattern of interference or communication loss is established by using the Communication
History tool, the next step should be to use the Channel Quality Scan tool to further troubleshoot. For
example, if it appears that each day around 8am communication is lost, then the technician should be
on site at 8am with the Channel Quality Scan tool scanning the suspected area for potential
interference. If interference is found then try to determine what is causing it, or change the channel as
needed. If no interference or communication loss is indicated in Communication History, but there are
still performance problems, then look for network design issues or obstructions.

Overview

Air-Fi uses Zigbee radios and channels to pass BACnet messages from controller to controller. Channel
Quality Scan is a tool which enables a technician to view available Zigbee channel bandwidth in the 2.4
GHz radio spectrum. Channel Quality Scan tool can be found under the Wireless drop down menu.
Shown on this screen are the 15 Zigbee channels that Air-Fi uses. See
labeled Channel 11 through 25. The green bars indicate available bandwidth for each Zigbee channel.
The taller the green bar, the more bandwidth that is available and more likely the Air-Fi wireless BACnet
messages will get through over the Zigbee channel. If a channel falls below the 30% threshold, it turns
red and is not recommended to be used because it does not have enough band width to support
transmitting BACnet messages over that Zigbee channel. See
17 and 18 below the 30% threshold.
