General Troubleshooting

Problem
The starter does not crank
The engine does not start, starts
hard, or fails to keep running
Engine loses power

Possible Cause
The blade control switch (PTO) is
engaged.
The parking brake is not engaged.
The motion-control levers are not in the
Neutral-Lock position.
The operator is not seated.
The battery is dead.
The electrical connections are corroded
or loose.
The fuse is blown.
The relay or switch is worn or damaged.
The fuel tank is empty.
The fuel shut-off valve is closed.
The oil level in the crankcase is low.
The throttle is not in the correct position.
There is dirt in the fuel filter.
There is dirt, water, or stale fuel in the
fuel system.
The air cleaner is dirty.
The seat switch is not functioning
properly.
The electrical connections are
corroded, loose, or damaged.
The relay or switch is worn or damaged.
The spark plug is fouled or improperly
gapped.
The spark plug wire is not connected.
The engine load is excessive.
The air cleaner is dirty.
The oil level in the crankcase is low.
The cooling fins and air passages
above the engine are plugged.
The vent hole in the fuel cap is plugged.
There is dirt in the fuel filter.
There is dirt, water, or stale fuel in the
fuel system.

Corrective Action
Move the blade-control switch (PTO) to
the disengaged position.
Set the parking brake.
Ensure that the motion-control levers
are in the Neutral-Lock position.
Sit on the seat.
Charge the battery.
Check the electrical connects for good
contact.
Replace the fuse.
Test and replace faulty relay or switch.
Fill the fuel tank.
Open the fuel shut-off valve.
Add oil to the crankcase.
Be sure that the throttle control is
midway between the slow and fast
positions.
Replace the fuel filter.
Clean and flush the fuel system.
Clean or replace the air cleaner
element.
Check the seat-switch indicator.
Replace the seat if necessary.
Check the electrical connections for
good contact. Clean the connector
terminals thoroughly with electrical-
contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease,
and make the appropriate connections.
Test and replace faulty relay or switch.
Adjust or replace the spark plug.
Check the spark plug wire connection.
Reduce the ground speed.
Clean the air cleaner element.
Add oil to the crankcase.
Remove the obstruction and thoroughly
clean cooling fins and the air passages.
Clean or replace the fuel cap.
Replace the fuel filter.
Clean and flush the fuel system.
