System Basics Introduction
Page 240
The PTP slave capability is available on all the ports on 7210 SAS-M, 7210 SAS-X, and
7210 SAS-T.
On 7210 SAS-M and 7210 SAS-X, use of PTP and syncE as a reference simultaneously is
not allowed. User can configure either syncE as a reference or PTP as a reference, but not
both together.
7210 SAS-T and 7210 SAS-R6 allows use of PTP and syncE as a reference
simultaneously, that is, on 7210 SAS-T and 7210 SAS-R6 ref-order can be set to -
configure> system> sync-if-timing> ref-order ref1 ref2 ptp.
The 7210 SAS-M and 7210 SAS-X nodes uses CPU processing cycles for frequency and
time recovery.
7210 SAS-M and 7210 SAS-X support PTP hybrid mode of operation. In PTP hybrid
mode, SyncE is used for frequency recovery and PTP for time recovery. PTP Hybrid mode
allows the node to recover very stable frequency using SyncE and recovers time using
reduced PTP packet rate. It reduces the amount of CPU processing cycles needed, helping
customers to scale better.
7210 SAS-T supports PTP hybrid mode (using syncE for frequency reference and PTP for
only time/phase).
7210 SAS-R6 does not support hybrid mode, it supports only pure PTP mode.
On 7210 SAS-T, to enable PTP hybrid mode user needs to execute the command
configure>system>ptp>freq-source ssu. To enable pure PTP mode, user needs to execute
the command configure>system>ptp>freq-source ptp. A change of value from either ssu
to ptp or viceversa, requires a reboot of the node to take effect after the configuration
changes are saved.
On 7210 SAS-R6, only BITS1 port can be used for providing a reference to the system
clock or for distributing the reference. BITS2 port cannot be used.
On 7210 SAS-T, both BITS1 and BITS2 port can be used for providing a reference to the
system clock or for distributing the reference.
On 7210 SAS-M it is highly recommended to use PTP only in hybrid mode. It allows
users to use reduced PTP packet rates on these platforms and scale better.
On 7210 SAS-T, an IP address must be configured under "configure> security> source-
address> application ptp", before PTP can be enabled for use. It is recommended to use
System IPv4 interface address or other loopback IPv4 interface address for PTP
applications. User can also specify IPv4 address of an IPv4 interface over a port. The PTP
software uses the configured IP address as the source IP address for both configured peers
and discovered peers.
On 7210 SAS-T and 7210 SAS-R6, 1pps and 10MHz interface signals must be used only
when PTP is enabled. In other words, use these signals after determining that the system is
configured to use PTP as a reference and is locked to PTP.
