Chapter 8 - Caterpillar Engine and Related Systems

Return-line fitting See Figure 8.111.
Figure 8.111
This is a simple elbow with no orifices or regula-
tion.
For installation: install the bushing first, lubricate
the fitting with diesel fuel, and install it in the
bushing.
FUEL
Diesel fuels that meet the Caterpillar Specifica-
tion for Distillate Fuels are recommended.
In North America, fuel that meets the "ASTM
D975" specification and is identified as #1-D or
#2-D generally meet the Caterpillar standards.
#2 diesel fuel is the most commonly used fuel.
#1 diesel fuel or a blend of #1 and #2 are suit-
able for cold weather operation. #1 is typically
available in the winter months in regions that
experience cold winter weather.
#1 diesel fuel has a lower cloud point and lower
pour point than #2 diesel. The cloud point is the
temperature at which the paraffin begins to shift
from a liquid structure to a crystalline (solid)
structure. The pour point is a measure of viscos-
ity. These factors make #1 diesel fuel more suit-
able to cold weather operation.
When burned, #1 diesel fuel produces less
energy per unit of volume than does #2 diesel
fuel.
A vehicle that is fueled in one climate and trans-
ported to a different climate may experience
fuel-related starting or performance issues.
SVO, bio-diesel, and other organic fuels are
not recommended for use in this vehicle.
ADJUSTMENTS:
ENGINE SPEED AND THROTTLE LINKAGE
1.
The engine should idle at 1,200 RPM:
See Figure 8.112.
Photo-tach:
suitable for use
on the driving element
Slower idle speeds will result in poor idle quality,
reduced flow of cooling air, and reduced oil flow.
Higher idle speeds will result in harsh gear
selector action and possible internal damage to
the transfer case.
2.
Top no-load speed should be 3,600 RPM:
See Figure 8.113.
Slower top no-load speeds will result in dimin-
ished performance.
Higher top no-load speeds will result in unsafe
operating conditions and possible over-speed
engine failure.
