Control Arms and Bushings

Refer to the INSPECTION section of this chapter
for information on when to replace control arm
bushings.
1.
Separate the hub from the control arm by remov-
ing the hub bolt using a pair of 9/16" wrenches.
See Figure 5.14.

For lower control arm only: Disconnect the
bottom of the spring and damper unit from the
lower control arm using a pair of 3/4" wrenches.

Support the control arm

For the upper control arm: Remove the clamp
that holds the brake line to the upper control arm
using a 3/8" wrench.
Chapter 5 - Rear Suspension

Remove the bolts that fasten the control arm to
the frame using a pair of 9/16" wrenches. See
Figure 5.16.
NOTE: Both bolts enter from the rear of the vehi-
cle. Only the rearmost of the two bolts has a
washer under its head.
5.
Lift the control arm out of the vehicle.
6.
To replace the bushings:
6a.
Fixture the control arm on a suitable press
so that the one arbor supports the arm but
does not prevent the bushing from being
driven out.
6b.
A second arbor of roughly 1" (2.5cm) out-
side diameter should be positioned to
drive against the outside shell of the bush-
ing. See Figure 5.17.
