Chapter 4 - Front Suspension and steering
16.

Assembly notes:

16a. Lubricate the splines that join the steering
shaft to the steering gear box with anti-
seize compound.
Align the blind spline on the steering shaft
with the blind spline on the steering box
input shaft, and slide the steering shaft
into place on the steering box.
See Figure 4.89.

16b. Install the clamp bolt that holds the steer-
ing shaft to the steering box, and tighten it
to a torque of 32-36 ft-lbs. (43-49 N-m).
16c. Install, or check for the presence of the
lower steering shaft bushing in the steer-
ing wheel bracket.
Lubricate the steering shaft where it will
ride against the bushing with grease.
16d.
Install the steering wheel bracket.
Tighten the nuts to a torque of 32-36 ft-
lbs. (43-49 N-m).
16e. Lubricate the part of the steering shaft that
rides against the upper steering shaft
bushing with grease.
16f.
Install the upper bushing, and secure it
with an E-clip.
16g.
Install the hood and dash bracket.
16h.
Install the dash panel.
16i. Install the steering wheel. Tighten the
patch bolt to a torque of 18-22 ft-lbs.
(24.5-30 N-m).
16j.
Connect all of the electrical devices in the
dash panel.
16k.
Connect the negative cable to the battery.
16l.
Install the hood.
16m. Test run the vehicle in a safe area before
returning it to service.

** Patch bolt. Replace with a new bolt, or apply releas-
able thread locking compound such as Loctite® 242
(blue).
