Chapter 8 - Caterpillar Engine and Related Systems
3.
Cleaning the air filter: See Figure 8.9.
Because this utility vehicle is not equipped with a
secondary air filter, cleaning the air filter is not
recommended in normal service. Generally, if
the air filter is removed, it should be replaced
with a new one.
DO NOT rap the filter on a hard surface to dis-
lodge dirt. Two types of damage can be done to
the filter by percussive maintenance:
The tapered seal at the end of filter can be dis-
torted, allowing dirt into the engine.
The metal screen that surrounds and supports
the filter media can be distorted so that it rubs
against the media. This may cause the media to
wear-through.
Vacuuming the outside of the filter is the best
method of cleaning it.

Each unnecessary removal of the air filter is an
opportunity for dirt to enter the engine.
Repeated removal of the filter element will
degrade the sealant that is sprayed onto the
sealing surface.
Because of the three-dimensional nature of the
filter media, visual inspection of the surface does
not provide an accurate indication of the media
condition.
The Cub Cadet utility vehicle is not equipped
with an air filter service indicator.
In summary: If it is not necessary to remove the
filter, it is best left alone until the replacement
interval is reached, or restriction causes loss of
performance.

Air filter construction and installation notes:

A red plastic cap covers the port that is used for
the service indicator in other applications.
See Figure 8.10.

Beneath the cap, a secondary seal is held in
place by a tension pin. See Figure 8.11.
Service indicator port:
blocked
It is not possible to fit a service indicator to the
Cub Cadet utility vehicle because of clearance
issues.
Cleanliness and sealing are of the utmost impor-
tance any time any connections in the air filter
system are disturbed.
Maximum hose clamp torque for air filtration sys-
tem connections in this application is 40 in-lb.
(4.5 N-m).
