Engine oil and oil filter

Oil and filter change intervals are 500 hrs or
12 months. This figure may need to be reduced
if the load factor for the engine is greater than
40%. The load factor is a function of the way the
an individual piece of equipment is used by the
operator.
The typical Caterpillar service rating Definition
for the engines used in Cub Cadet utility vehicles
is "C".
Caterpillar dealers offer S-O-S oil analysis ser-
vice. This oil analysis should be performed at
250 hr. intervals. The initial analysis will help
determine the load rating of the engine.
Engine oil type: Caterpillar recommends using
oil having an API rating of CG-4. Oils having a
rating of CH-4 and CI-4 are acceptable if they
meet Caterpillar's ECF-1 (Engine Crankcase
Fluid) specifications, but may cause reduced
engine life.
Caterpillar recommends using their own CAT
brand DEO (Diesel Engine Oil) because they
control the specifications and quality of the prod-
uct.
Recommended oil viscosities for ambient tem-
perature ranges are listed in the table below:
Viscosity
SAE 0W-20
-40f. to 50f. (-40c. to 10c.)
SAE 0W-30
-40f. to 86f. (-40c. to 30c.)

To change the engine oil:

6a.
Warm-up the engine. Not only will the oil
flow out of the engine more easily, but
more contaminants will be suspended in
the oil that comes-out. This results in a
more effective oil change.
CAUTION: Hot oil can cause burns. Use cau-
tion when draining the oil and do not come in
direct contact with it.
6b.
Position a clean drain pan beneath the oil
filter and drain plug.
6c.
Clean the area around the drain plug
before removing the plug.
See Figure 8.12.
Drain plug
6d. Remove the drain plug and sealing washer
using a 17mm wrench.
NOTE: If the sealing washer is undamaged, it
may be reused. It is strongly recommended to
discard the sealing washer and replace it with a
new one at each oil change.
6e.
Raise the cargo box and remove the
engine cover to gain access to the oil fil-
ter. It is located on the inboard side of the
engine, near the front.
6f.
Save a sample of the drained oil for testing
using the Caterpillar 169-8373 Fluid Sam-
pling Bottle, accompanied by a completed
PEEP5031 label. The partnering Caterpil-
lar dealer will perform infrared analysis of
the oil sample to check for contaminants
and metal content levels.
