6r.
Cut the oil filter open using a commercially
available filter cutter.
Break apart the pleats to look for excessive
debris.
A magnet may be used to differentiate between
ferrous and non-ferrous metal. The types of
metal in the oil filter provide an indication as to
what parts of the engine are wearing.
Normal engine wear will result in some debris
accumulation in the oil filter.
Examining filters on a regular basis will help
technicians develop a feel for what is a normal
amount and what is excessive.
Excessive debris warrants an oil analysis and
further investigation.
6s.
Dispose of the remainder of the waste oil
in a safe and responsible manner.

Fuel Filter Maintenance: draining condensate
CAUTION: Diesel fuel is flammable. Do not ser-
vice the fuel filter or any other part of the fuel
system when the engine is hot or near any
source of potential ignition.
CAUTION: Diesel fuel is toxic. Dispose of any
waste fuel in a safe and environmentally respon-
sible manner. Contact your local EPA office for
proper disposal methods and recycling center
locations.
CAUTION: Diesel fuel injection systems operate
at pressures that are high enough to penetrate
the skin. If any high pressure leak is suspected,
direct exposure to the fuel system when it is in
operation is extremely dangerous and can be
fatal. If fluid is injected into a person's skin, they
need to get medical treatment immediately.
Seek treatment from a doctor that is familiar with
this type of injury.
NOTE: Fuel is transferred from the tank to the
injector pump by a low pressure pump. The
injector pump and injector lines on the engine
operate at high pressure. See Figure 8.15.

NOTE: Water should be drained from the water
trap-filter each day before operation.
The fuel system circulates the fuel continually,
with unused fuel returning to the tank. The build-
ing of pressure and the cooling that results as
the pressure is released will cause condensate
(water) to accumulate.
