1d.
Remove the spring from the breather
cover.
1e. Clean the cover thoroughly, making certain
that the vent hole is clear.
1f.
Apply a very sparing amount of thread
locking compound such as Loctite® 242
(blue) to the threads of the screws, and
install the breather cover using no seal-
ant.
2.
Valve lash is .008" (0.20mm) for both intake and
exhaust valves measured when the valves are
cool.
Caterpillar considers valve adjustment to be an
intrusive procedure to be performed only by a
Caterpillar dealer.
Caterpillar recommends that the valve lash be
checked and adjusted on new and freshly rebuilt
engines at the first lubrication maintenance inter-
val: 500 hrs.
Incorrect valve lash may cause inefficient engine
operation and may damage engine components.
3.
Alternator and water pump belt
The belt should be inspected and adjusted if
necessary at 250 hr. intervals
The belt should be replaced at 1,000 hr. intervals
or after four years of use.
Following belt replacement, the belt should be
inspected and adjusted after a jog-start or 3 min-
utes of operation, then again after 5 hrs. or one
day of use.
CAUTION: Do not work near the exhaust sys-
tem after the vehicle has been run until it has
cooled.
3a.
Using a Browning belt tester according to
the manufacturer's instructions:
Chapter 8 - Caterpillar Engine and Related Systems
3b.
Correct belt tension is 4.4lbs. (2kg.) using
a 7" (18cm) belt span. See Figure 8.23.
3c.
If adjustment is necessary, it is made by
pivoting the alternator on its bracket.
3d.
The easiest way to reach the adjustment
point is to raise the cargo box and remove
the right side splash shield using a 1/2"
wrench and a 3/8" wrench to disconnect
the splash shield from the frame.
See Figure 8.24.
