Disconnect the heavy gauge red cable
from the alternator using a 10mm wrench.
See Figure 8.28.

Disconnect the paired orange wires from
the end of the alternator (IG and L termi-
nals) by squeezing the tab to release the
molded connector. See Figure 8.29.

Remove the tension adjusting bolt that
holds the alternator to the adjusting
bracket using a 12mm wrench.

Remove the nut from the pivot bolt using a
pair of 12mm wrenches.

Slip the alternator pulley out of the belt.

Withdraw the pivot bolt carefully so as not
to drop the shouldered spacer that fits
between the alternator and the engine
block. See Figure 8.30.

Pull the alternator out through the rear
fender opening.

Reverse the removal procedure to install
the alternator.

Set belt tension and tighten fasteners as
described in the alternator and water
pump belt section of this chapter.
4m. Re-connect the negative battery terminal,
test run the vehicle and check the charg-
ing system before reinstalling the splash
shield.

Starter Motor

5a.
Before removing the starter motor:
Test the starter circuit and ground circuit to con-
firm that the core problem does not lie elsewhere
in the system. Use the techniques described in
the electrical chapter of this manual.
Test the amperage draw of the starter.
Confirm that the starter load is not made artifi-
cially higher by the presence of parasitic loads.
Contact the partnering Caterpillar dealership.
