SPARK PLUG

Replacement: every 6000 km
Recommended type of spark plug: NGK DPR8EA9
The spark plug is an important engine component.
• Proper care of the spark plug is essential to maintain
the engine in perfect working order.
• For spark plug maintenance requirements remove the
centre partition under the seat (A) by removing the four
fixing screws (V) and lifting the bottom profile (with the
aid of a screwdriver) which is interlocked with the foot-
board by means of two tabs. Carefully remove the cap
by twisting it clockwise and anticlockwise alternatively
(B). Now, unscrew the spark plug using the spark plug
wrench supplied with the scooter. Note that all opera-
tions on the spark plug must be performed when the
engine is cold.
• Inspect the spark plug after riding between 10 and 15
km and after waiting at least 10 - 15 minutes for the
engine to cool. Any deposits on the plug and the colour
of the insulator can provide useful information concern-
ing the heat rating, the fuel-air mixture, and the general
condition of the engine. If the engine and spark plug
are in good working order the insulator should dis-
play light brown discolouration around the central elec-
trode.
• After removing the spark plug clean the electrodes and
insulator with a wire brush. Adjust the electrode gap
using a feeler gauge: the spark plug gap should be-
tween 0.6 and 0.7 mm.
• Blow away any filings and grit to ensure that no con-
taminants enter the cylinder, then refit the spark plug,
tightening it by hand initially and then using the spark
plug wrench to tighten it to the prescribed torque set-
ting:
Tightening torque: 17.5 N*m / 1.75 kg*m.
NOTE Using spark plugs with heat rating other than
the recommended value (as marked on the
plug) can result in serious damage to the en-
gine.
If the spark plug insulator is cracked and/or
electrodes are corroded it must be replaced
immediately.
