Premium Features. DS3000 Enhanced Remote Mirroring ERM With the DS3500 and DS3950 ERM provides a way to create a remote image copy of a source logical drive. This capability is frequently used for the creation of a disaster recovery site located in a different location some distance from the primary location.

The SAS ports on the DS3500 controller and EXP3500 ESM all support mini-SAS 4x multilane connectors. SAS cables with mini-SAS connectors that will fit in these ports are required, as shown in Figure 3-3 on page 36. IBM provides SAS cables in two cable lengths: 1 and 3 meters.

In Figure 3-4 on page 37 we show an example of SAS connections being made to direct attached hosts and a bladecenter through it internal SAS switch module. The DS3500 comes with two standard built-in SAS ports per controller; and this figure show the system with the additional option daughter card for the additional two ports per controller.
DS3500 Storage Manager will not be able to manage the enclosure. It is a best practice to not use your public LAN for DS3500 out-of-band management. Instead, set up a dedicated LAN or VLAN just for management purposes. This will provide increased security of your DS3500 storage system.

Fibre Channel components are able to provide more connections in the same amount of space. All DS3500 series products use SFP transceivers and LC fiber cables. See Figure 3-7. Figure 3-8 shows a simple direct-attached configuration. Two host servers are connected to a dual-controller DS3500. Each server uses two FC HBAs, so this is a fully redundant setup. If an HBA, FC cable, or RAID controller fails, the host servers will still have access to logical drives.

Load balancing or load sharing means distributing I/O requests from the hosts between multiple adapters, which can be done by assigning LUNs to both the DS3500 controllers A and B alternatively (see also 3.3.6, “Logical drives and controller ownership” on page 63).

It is very important to correctly set the tray (enclosure) IDs. They are used to differentiate multiple EXP enclosures that are connected to the same DS3500 Storage System. Each EXP enclosure must use a unique value. The DS3500 Storage Manager (SM) uses the tray IDs to identify each EXP enclosure.

When the IBM DS system storage detects that it is receiving contiguous full stripe writes it will switch internally to an even faster write capability known as Fast Stripe Write Through. In this method of writing the DS system storage uses the disk as the mirror device for the cache write and shortens the write process.

RAID 6 achieves n+2 redundancy because it calculates two sets of parity information for each block of data (P+Q) that is striped across the disks. The DS3500 storage subsystem performs the P+Q parity calculations in hardware.

RAID Levels summary In this section we summarize the general characteristics of the various RAID levels supported by the DS3500 storage subsystem. The following note and Table 3-3 summarize this information. Summary: The general performance characteristics of the various RAID levels are: RAID 0 offers high performance, but does not provide any data redundancy.
While most storage subsystems (including the DS3500 storage subsystem) have mechanisms in place to try to prevent this from happening, they cannot work 100% of the time.

I/O, which reduces disk latency, in most cases about 20 to 28 drives are enough to reach the maximum throughput. This does, however, require that the drives be spread evenly across the DS3500 to best utilize the system bandwidth. The storage subsystem is optimized in its firmware to give increased throughput when the load is spread across all parts.

Depending on your configuration, it might be wise to use more than just one hot spare. In small DS3500 configurations with a relatively low number of disk drives, one hot spare might suffice. But for larger configurations, we recommend that you define several hot spares.

Cache blocksize selection On the DS3500, the cache blocksize is a variable value that can be set to 4 K, 8 K, or 16 K. The general default setting is 8 K. The main goals with setting this value are to minimize the number of cache IO’s needed, and at the same time, not waste space.
In mixed workload environments, you must decide which workload type is most critical and set the system wide settings to best handle your business needs. Best Practice: Set the cache blocksize to 8 K for the DS3500, normally for mixed workload environments.
Typically, you create a FlashCopy so that an application (for example, an application to take backups) can access the FlashCopy and read the data while the base logical drive remains online and user-accessible. The DS3500 can have up to eight FlashCopy volumes.

When using the DS3500 Storage System, the use of software mirroring and software RAID 5 is not required. Instead, configure the storage on the DS3500 Storage System for the redundancy level required.
The SVC is very flexible in its use. It can manage all host storage requirements or just part of them. A DS3500 Storage System can still be used to allocate storage to hosts or use the SVC, which is dependent upon various needs and requirements.

Most Fibre Channel cables have an LC connector at both ends, and we call these LC-LC cables. You will use LC-LC cables when you are connecting the DS3500 host ports to a port on a SAN switch or a Host Bus Adapter that supports SFP modules.
You must use either a Category 5e or a Category 6 Ethernet cable when you are connecting a DS3500 controller iSCSI host port to a gigabit Ethernet switch, and then connect a similar Ethernet cable from the switch to the host iSCSI initiator port.
You should always follow these two basic connection rules when attaching EXP3500 enclosures to a DS3500 storage subsystem: Connect the drive expansion SAS port on the DS3500 controller to the SAS IN port on the EXP3500. Connect the SAS OUT port on the EXP3500 to the SAS IN port on the next EXP3500.
Figure 4-16 shows the SAS connections between a single controller DS3500 subsystem and three EXP3500 enclosures, with a single ESM installed in each EXP3500. You should use the two connection rules above to connect the SAS ports on the DS3500 and the EXP3500s as shown.

Adding an EXP3500 to a running DS3500 configuration with EXP3500 attached In this scenario, there are already EXP3500 enclosures attached to a running DS3500 configuration. We use the following steps to attach the EXP3500 to the DS3500: 1. Make sure that the storage subsystem status is Optimal in the DS Storage Manager software.
4.6.7 SAS Drive Channel Miswires If the SAS cabling on the drive side is incorrect, it will be detected by the DS3500 controller firmware. The Storage Manager application will alert you about the condition by logging a critical Major Event Log event.
Out-of-band management uses a network connection to the TCP/IP ethernet ports on the rear panels of each DS3500 controller (see Figure 4-19). Typically, you will only need to connect one ethernet port from each controller to your management LAN. You can either specify a fixed TCP/IP configuration or you can use DHCP/BOOTP settings.
Security is enhanced when management LANs/VLANs and more advanced solutions, such as VPN, can be used to manage the system remotely. You can use one DS Storage Manager client to manage more than one DS3500 storage subsystems in the network.
Not all operating systems support the access logical drive. In-band management is not supported on these systems. You will be unable to manage or monitor the DS3500 storage subsystem if there is a fault with the host I/O connection between the DS3500 storage subsystem and the host server.
We recommend that you always use redundant host connections. The use of redundant host connections with a single controller DS3500 storage subsystem is supported but limits the number of hosts to a maximum of two if the optional SAS host card is installed in the DS3500. SAS host attachment examples In this section we show some examples of SAS host attachment with single and dual controller DS3500 storage subsystems.

During the migration process, the array cannot be deleted, logical drive cannot be deleted, new logical drives cannot be created in the migrated array. Some configuration changes that does not change data structures on the array can be performed on logical drives during the migration process.
Note: Storage Manager supports RAID 0 and 1 arrays with more than 30 drives. In certain DS3500 storage subsystem configurations, this can improve performance, provided that the system is optimally tuned. It also improves the data capacities of these arrays. RAID 1 or 10 requires an even number of disk drives.
For RAID levels 3, 5, and 6, select one or two drive, and for RAID levels 1 and 10, mandatory two drives must be selected. Pay attention to the following considerations: Only SAS drives are supported on DS3500, so every unconfigured disk drive with appropriate capacity can be listed as candidate to add.

Your host servers can only see these Logical Drives. The Logical Drive can be tuned by many parameters and we describe the most of them in the following sections.

The cache of the DS3500 storage subsystem is protected by a battery against power loss. If the batteries are failed or not fully charged, for example, just after powering on, the controllers automatically disable the write cache.
This is the default and recommended configuration. Table 9-2 on page 251 shows the errors and describes several of the actions that the DS3500 storage subsystem takes as a result of a media scan and redundancy check operations.

This controller normally handles all I/O requests for this particular logical drive.
A segment, in a logical drive, is the amount of data, in kilobytes, that the controller writes on a single physical drive before writing data on the next physical drive. 10.5 Set preferred loop ID Loop ID is unique ID of a port in fibre-channel loop topology, sometimes is referred as a loop address. The Preferred Loop ID menu is not available for DS3500 without FC daughter card installed. Attention: If your Fibre Channel host adapter driver manages storage subsystems based on a loop ID (or arbitrated loop physical address - AL_PA), do not change the value of the preferred loop ID.
This option lets IBM engineers access the subsystem controller by TELNET. It can be done from outside of the server room where DS3500 Storage Subsystem is installed, and so IBM engineer does not need to be physically attached to the special serial management port of DS3500, which is used for maintenance only.
Ethernet switch if needed. 10.7.1 Initial settings for default IP addresses in DS Storage Manager In order to change the default IP addresses, first you must connect to the DS3500 storage subsystem. Perform the following steps: 1. Connect the Ethernet ports to an isolated Ethernet switch.
Click OK to accept synchronization if prompted to do so. f. Now you are connected to the DS3500 Storage Subsystem, but with the default IP addresses. You need to change the address to your specific ones. Follow the standard procedure described in 10.7.2, “Configure Ethernet Management Ports”...
OK after configuring both of them. You must set the same default gateway on both controllers. The DS3500 has two Ethernet ports per controller. Make sure to select the port of each controller you already cabled. If you are planning to have the system connected to only one network, select port 1, leaving port 2 for service.

Administration - Mappings Tab Chapter 11. In this chapter, we describe the Mappings tab of the IBM System Storage DS Storage Manager. This tab is primarily used for assigning Logical Drives to host servers. It is done by storage partitioning (we name this process also “mapping”). This functionality is also known as “LUN masking”.

In previous sections we described how to assign host ports (HBA in servers) to the Host. To check what other host ports are already recognized by your DS3500 Storage Subsystem, but are not assigned to a Host yet, select the option Mappings View Unassociated Host Port Identifiers from the pull down menu bar, or select Unassociated Host Port Identifiers icon in Topology tree, right click and select View.
This option is used to rename a host or host group. Note: Be careful if some SMcli scripts are applied on your DS3500. If you rename your host and its name is used in SMcli script, this will not work. Changes of the host mapping are used almost in every DR process.

Secure erase provides a higher level of data erasure than other traditional methods. When you initiate secure erase with the DS3500 Storage Manager, a command is sent to the FDE drive to perform a “cryptographic erase”.
