Print Productivity

The very notion of judging the productivity of
a device of this type in terms of a 'print test'
is crude at best. As mentioned earlier in the
report, the concept of productivity to a CRD/
print shop manager is surrounded by factors
other than a simple assessment of how fast
a job comes out after the start is initiated.
The typical length of a print job submitted to
these devices alone renders a traditional
print speed test meaningless due to the long
series of sets outputting at engine speed,
absorbing any start up time delay while the
job is being ripped and spooled.
An operator considering a CRD/
print shop device will also be
expected to keep a queue of work
lined up at the device so the
device is never sitting idle for
periods of the day while the
operator is busy attending to other
tasks.
Thus, the process of ripping and
spooling jobs is carried out in the
background while the device
continues with another job. When
the job is completed, the device
simply pulls the next post ripped
job out of its queue and continues
working.
It is only through assessing the
workflow requirements, and
matching these needs with
features offered by the device,
that a true measure of productivity
can be ascertained for a device of
this type.
The example of the print on
demand manual process on the
previous page is a case in point.
The productivity time in the eyes
of the CRD manager is the time

taken for the operator to drag the file into the
hot folder, choose one hundred, load the
paper into the appropriate drawers and
release the job.
A device without this ability might involve
much more operator time setting up the
various cover, tab, paper selection and other
finishing requirements prior to the job even
being released to the device. This is wasted
time that the operator could be spending
doing other work which could be billed for,
thus reducing the overall productivity and
profitability of the workplace.
