As mentioned during our discussion of the
PPL, an area of weakness on the chapter
and sheet insertion feature set of the device
was the inability to utilize the post process
insertion paper feed options. This would
have allowed — as it does on some
competing units—operators to incorporate
pre-printed material such as color pages,
photographs, special media etc into the bulk
of the document.
Instead, operators are restricted to using the
post process insertion feature only for
adding covers to the document.
Another feature worthy of note is the
program job function. While not new to the
Océ product line, it is still a
differentiator and a feature that will be
greeted favorably by a back office/CRD
operator. In essence, the program job mode
allows operators to apply document setting
criteria on a scan session by scan session
basis until the entire job has been built in
memory.
For example, CRD gets sent a hard copy of
the company sales manual. The manual is
comprised of many sections divided up into
chapters using tabs, with each section
printed on different colored stock for easy
navigation.

Rather than scan to entire job into memory
and then have to go through the laborious
process of specifying sheet insertion ranges
on a page by page basis, allocating a
different paper stock to each set, the Océ
VarioPrint 1105's program job
mode allows the operator to first break the
document into its individual components,
enter the paper source selection and then
scan the pages into memory, repeating the
process for each section of the manual. The
job is now stored with the correct settings
with no opportunity for incorrect page
number ranges.
If you now enter duplex printing of certain
pages within the document, say the
introduction and index, some competitors
cannot even handle the job, having no ability
to mix two-sided and single-sided originals,
or they force the user to preset the entire
scanning of the document into double-sided
mode which will impact user productivity due
to the much longer scanning time required
before the task of building the job in memory
can even begin. In addition, these users will
be charged for unnecessary duplexed
pages.
